Rick Wilson exposes the Trump allies desperate for it all to end

As President Donald Trump appears to be surrounding himself more and more with comforting people, conservative commentator Rick Wilson revealed that some key figures are desperate to get out, describing them as saying, “Come, sweet meteor of death.”

Wilson, a vocal anti-Trump conservative and co-founder of The Lincoln Project, was a guest on the latest edition of the “Fast Politics” podcast, where host Molly Jong-Fast began their conversation with the news about the people who traveled with Trump to a recent midterm rally in Dayton, Ohio. This group, whom they referred to as the “Bad Idea caucus,” included his close aide Natalie Harp, his personal senior counsel Boris Epshteyn, former acting DNI director Bill Pulte, former congressman Darrell Issa, current congressman Dusty Johnson and CIA director John Ratcliffe.

Wilson put forward his “theory of the case” for this particular crew of Trump allies, arguing that while he should be surrounding himself with important people — like chief of staff Suzie Wiles, 2024 campaign advisor Chris LaCavita, pollster Tony Fabrizio and midterm operations manager James Blair — he is instead opting for his “core binkie team,” referencing a term circulated to describe close allies that Trump relies on for personal comfort.

“This seems more like the people who make him feel good,” Wilson said. “And I gotta tell you I have a real skepticism about whether Suzie’s got any hand left at all on the tiller, right?”

Wilson also added that he has heard from a few Republicans about LaCavita and Fabrizio, two of the biggest elections and polling experts closest to Trump, that they are increasingly desperate for an end to the mess that the administration has become, especially as they see a disaster headed for the GOP in the midterms.

“I have heard from a couple Republicans that Fabrizio and LaCavita are now in, like, the ‘Come, sweet meteor of death, take us all’ phase of their careers,” Wilson explained.

Jong-Fast added that this reaction is almost certainly a result of the midterm polling Fabrizio is seeing, especially now that he is collaborating with fellow pollster John Anzalone from the Harvard Institute of Politics. She described that pair as “the killers” with “really good track records” in polling, noting that Fabrizio in particular is “the gold standard for Republican polling,” with Anzalone being much the same on the Democratic side.

“And John has shown that, like, the bottom has f——ing fallen out for Republicans,” Jong-Fast said.

“And here’s one of the things about election polling, and my son Andrew and I were talking about this the other day because he’s a pollster,” Wilson added. “Very rarely do the numbers get better in the last month of a campaign, but they also don’t Dramatically drop out, but what we’re seeing now if you look at the New York Times/Siena poll from just this morning, the numbers are dropping out.”
