President Donald Trump’s administration is starting to “collapse” as Americans watch, at least according to a Republican who served under the previous president from his party.

“The one thing that 70 percent of the country agrees on is that Donald Trump is incompetent,” Steve Schmidt, who served under George W. Bush, explained for his Substack on Wednesday. “They don’t approve. He’s failing. And he is. He always has been. Everything he has ever been involved in, business-wise, before he had a license to — this deal has failed. Exhibit A, Atlantic City.”
From there Schmidt listed Trump’s failings, including his choice of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense (“the religious crackpot, drunk, and credibly accused rapist festooned with Christian nationalist extremist tattoos”), Scott Bessent as Secretary of Treasury (“the smuggest man of the administration” who describes himself as “broke” even though he is an “almost-billionaire who’s helped raise prices on everything that everyone in America needs”) and Tom Homan to lead Trump’s crackdown on immigrants (“the marble-mouthed scumbag who took a $50,000 bribe in cash in a kava bag”). He also criticized two Trump officials who have since lost their power, the former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and her associate and alleged lover Corey Lewandowski.
From there, Schmidt chided Democrats for not doing more to hold these individuals and Trump himself accountable.
“Democrats cannot tolerate this — a secret police with the license to kill whomever they please, and then the audacity to lie about it once again,” Schmidt said. “‘Oh, they tried to run us over with their car.’ We live in a republic of lies. From the president on down, they think they have the license to delude us with their delusions, to poison us with their ambitious lies, to gain a seat closer to Trump on predator patio at Mar-a-Lago. And obviously the competition is fierce, given Lindsey’s open seat.”

Wrapping up by describing Trump’s administration as full of “imbeciles and scumbags” who are “doing catastrophic damage to the country,” he accused the president of failing in his war against Iran and in his health care policy, as well as creating immense fraud and waste in the American government. As the American people notice these things, Schmidt said, Trump’s approval rating falls, and this will ultimately lead to the end of Trump’s MAGA movement.
“Together, they approximate the Star Wars Creature Cantina — a bar scene of nuttery,” Schmidt concluded. “And that is what MAGA is, in the end.”
This is not the first time Schmidt has simultaneously blasted Trump and also blasted the Democrats he believes are not reacting harshly enough to Trump. He has previously criticized Trump for violating the First Amendment by persecuting journalists who are critical of him, not following the ideals of America’s founding fathers and aspiring to be an “American Caesar.”
