Earlier this week, The Hill reported that two of the U.S. Senate’s top Republicans — Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) and Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) — had just had lengthy conversations with Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky). And one of The Hill’s sources said that McConnell, who has been hospitalized, is anxious to get back to work. But a combination of Democrats and MAGA Republicans are accusing the Senate’s GOP leadership of not being transparent about former Senate Majority Leader McConnell’s health.

Conservative attorney George Conway is asking for transparency as well.
When NewsNation reporter Jackie Koppell posted, on X, some details about McConnell’s condition, Conway wanted to know why her source needed anonymity.
Koppell tweeted, “NEW on MCCONNELL’s health: ‘He’s alive. He’s not brain dead. He’s in rehab and the hospital. With his condition, he needs time to physically recover. But mentally he’s fine. The doctors want to make sure he’s okay.’ Unlikely McConnell is back at the Capitol next week although possible, the source adds. -Source familiar with the McConnell health situation tells me and @JoeKhalilTV.”
Conway, in response to Koppell, posted, “Is it asking too much for someone to say this on the record?”
Conway was a Republican for most of his life, but these days, he is vehement critic of the GOP, President Donald and his MAGA allies.

The attorney was a prominent figure in the conservative legal movement and had close ties to the right-wing Federalist Society. But Conway (whose ex-wife, Kellyanne Conway, was a top Trump adviser in the White House during his first presidency) became highly critical of the GOP when Trump became its dominant figure during the 2016 election.
Very much in the Never Trump camp of conservatism, Conway repeatedly bashed Trump during his first term — while his then-wife was aggressively defending him. In the 2020 election, George Conway passionately rooted for Democratic nominee Joe Biden; then, in 2024, he was an ardent support of that year’s Democratic presidential nominee, Kamala Harris.
McConnell, now 84, was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984.
Earlier this week, CNN’s MAGA pundit Scott Jennings (a GOP strategist) said he had spoken to McConnell on the phone. But Jennings, who is Trump’s most aggressive defender at CNN, drew a lot of criticism for not offering more details about the nature of McConnell’s illness and exactly why he has been hospitalized for weeks.
