Graham Platner has survived a string of scandals in his run for Maine\u2019s Democratic U.S. Senate nomination. But his latest one \u201clooks different,\u201d says CNN analyst Harry Enten.<\/p>\n

Platner seemed to have survived his controversial tattoo scandal, his \u201cangry and offensive\u201d Reddit comments scandal, and the scandal surrounding him \u201camplifying a post by a notorious anti-semite on social media and appearing on a podcast with a different antisemitic conspiracy theorist,\u201d as TIME reported last month.<\/p>\n

Platner\u2019s latest scandal involved his alleged sexually explicit texts to women who were not his wife, texts his wife reportedly told his campaign about last year.<\/p>\n

Campaign aides \u201cultimately decided the texts were a private matter that was being handled by the couple in marriage counseling, a campaign official said,\u201d according to the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n

But now, Enten says, Google searches for \u201cGraham Platner\u201d and \u201cMaine\u201d have been up \u201csignificantly\u201d over the past few days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re talking about up 275 percent over the last three days versus the three-month average, and more than that, more people searched for him on Sunday in Maine than at any point that I could find, even given the past revelations, about the tattoos, as well,\u201d says Enten. \u201cSo it seems to me that this time may, in fact, be different where Mainers\u2019 focus on Graham Platner is higher.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout 10 days ago, Democrats had a 70 percent chance \u2014 that\u2019s essentially Platner \u2014 had a 70 percent chance of winning the general election. Now, that number has fallen. It\u2019s fallen rather significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Platner has dropped from 70 percent to 59 percent against incumbent GOP Senator Susan Collins. Enten says that is now \u201cwell within the margin of error.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI dare say too close to call, although Platner is still favored, but his chances have gone down significantly and Collins\u2019 have gone up significantly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Polls have consistently underestimated Collins, Enten noted.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Puck News reports that Democrats are \u201cfretting that their best chance in decades to unseat\u201d Collins is being \u201cjeopardized\u201d by the latest Platner scandal.<\/p>\n

Puck notes that \u201cmultiple Democrats have described a sense of resignation\u201d that Platner \u201cis the only candidate they\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Maine\u2019s Democratic incumbent Governor Janet Mills, \u201cwho suspended her state\u2019s Senate primary, has reminded voters her name is still on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n
