Puck Chief Political Columnist John Heilemann says the jabs poking President Donald Trump are not just coming from late-night comedians anymore. Much of America appears to be jumping in on the comedy, thanks to Trump\u2019s wash of bad policies and his cratering polls.<\/p>\n

Heilemann, reacting to Trump\u2019s latest gaffe of celebrating the pardon of 250 convicted criminals on the nation\u2019s 250th<\/sup> anniversary, told MS NOW anchor Nicole Wallace that America appears to be treating Trump like an ongoing gag.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know how seriously I take [society\u2019s] signals, even if the signals themselves of what’s going on are kind of risible and almost beyond parody,\u201d said Heilemann. \u201cThese are signals, not noise. And I think they are telling us something about Trump’s declining political power.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of Trump\u2019s greatest talents, said Heilemann, was reading society and knowing how to trigger and goad society into supporting him, often exciting the nation\u2019s worst elements.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand what was so important to establishing the kind of political power that he had and how important culture was to that. \u2026 Six months ago, we were asking that question, \u2018hey, there seems to be some signs that Donald Trump is losing the culture.\u2019 Now we’re sort of like, \u2018it’s not just that he’s losing the culture, it’s that he’s losing the culture so dramatically that it’s becoming like a three stooges act.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 Where is the fear that people had in January of 2025, \u2026 when Trump seemed like he could be more permanent? All of that is gone, now,\u201d said Heilemann. \u201cThe question now is just \u2018how can we outlast him? And can we keep enough of the country together and the institutions of the country together?\u2019 Because he’s not going to leave a lasting mark on the country. We can see that now. The culture is throwing up all over Donald Trump right now. And I think that that gives us gives people some measure of hope about what’s recoverable here with a lot of hard work after he’s gone.”<\/p>\n
