A House Republican from one of America\u2019s reddest states privately confessed that President Donald Trump\u2019s unpopularity and pointless executive actions were hurting the party and endangering safe Republican seats like hers in the upcoming midterms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge that we have is that we have to get over the narrative that \u2018I don\u2019t like this guy, so I\u2019m going to vote for the Democrat,\u2019\u201d said Rep. Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.), according to audio obtained by The Bulwark. \u201cBecause I\u2019m telling you right now, I\u2019m hearing it already.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what happens is that\u2019ll impact me because . . . two things will either happen,\u201d Bice continued in the recording. \u201cThey\u2019re going to vote for the Democrat and they may split [the] ticket and vote for me and a few others, or \u2014 this is my bigger fear right now \u2014 people don\u2019t go vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Bulwark reports Bice fessed up to her anxiety at a gathering of Republican students at Oklahoma State University on Thursday evening. The audio provided rare and very frank insight \u201cinto the gloom\u201d some elected Republicans feel about the impending midterms, Bulwark said. <\/p>\n

Bice also relayed a recent conversation she\u2019d had with a Republican executive who described the president as draining.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was at a board meeting yesterday with a group, and one of the execs said to me, \u2018I\u2019m a Republican. I\u2019ve been a Republican for a long time, but I have Trump fatigue.\u2019 It\u2019s a fair statement, you know?\u201d Bice told the students.<\/p>\n

Bulwark reports Bice to be \u201can unabashed Trump ally\u201d who has \u201ctouted her support from the president and appears alongside him\u201d at Oval Office events. A spokesman for Bice moved quickly to clean her comments in followup interviews.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was relaying a comment made by someone else and discussing the importance of Republicans turning out and voting for the entire ticket,\u201d said campaign spokesman Wesley Harkins. \u201cCongresswoman Bice strongly supports President Trump and his work to secure the border, rebuild our economy, strengthen our military, and put America First. She is proud to have his endorsement and looks forward to continuing to fight with the president to defeat the Democrat socialists. Any suggestion otherwise takes her comments out of context.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, Bulwark reports Bice fretted about what she characterized as \u201csignificantly lower\u201d Republican turnout in the state\u2019s June primary, saying, \u201cthere\u2019s a fear that people have sort of checked out, and I think that\u2019s probably true in a lot of cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRepublican turnout in Oklahoma\u2019s June congressional primaries was down compared to the 2018 primaries,\u201d writes Bulwark reporter Joe Perticone. \u201cBice\u2019s district is considered solidly Republican, but not overwhelmingly so. It has an R+9 rating by the Cook Report, and Bice herself noted in the talk with the OSU Republicans that the urban areas within her district make it potentially more favorable to Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n
