Conservative Dispatch writer Nick Catoggio is no fan of President Donald Trump. But some rants go further than others, and Trump\u2019s recent behavior clearly sent Catoggio into a frenzy.<\/p>\n

Trump fired Army chief of staff Gen. Randy George earlier this year, in part because he refused to rescind the recommendations for promotion he had made on behalf of several officers, two of them Black and two of them women \u2014 which Catoggio said in Pete Hegseth\u2019s \u201canti-DEI\u201d military made them \u201cpresumptively unqualified.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFiring a capable officer like Randy George is bad. Firing him because he didn\u2019t show proper respect for Kid Rock is so unbearably humiliating for the United States that I feel it in my chest,\u201d growled Catoggio. \u201c\u2018Shameful\u2019 isn\u2019t the right word, as shame implies a sense of guilt over some serious offense for which you feel directly or indirectly responsible. \u2026 The George episode isn\u2019t so much shameful as it is pathetic. It betrays a bratty juvenile fatuousness that\u2019s only possible in political leaders who fundamentally don\u2019t grasp, or actively disdain, the concept of dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

But while America has had periods of weakness, Catoggio said it\u2019s never been a laughingstock in his lifetime. Of course, that was before \u201cLake America.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the \u2018Gulf of America\u2019 rebrand was a declaration of triumph, the targeting of Lake Ontario is a declaration of defeat,\u201d said Catoggio. \u201cIt was inspired, of course, by the stupid-even-for-him new trade war the president has launched against Canada. \u2026 [C]hanging the name of Lake Ontario reeks of impotence and humiliation. It\u2019s transparently an act of spite by a man-baby who\u2019s lashing out after failing to get his way. And it\u2019s a boost for his domestic opponents on the left, who already planned to campaign this fall on the idea that the president is too absorbed with trivial idiocy like ballrooms \u2014 and now lakes \u2014 to address the problems he was elected to solve.\u201d<\/p>\n

And it a move that\u2019s entirely phone and bitter, Catoggio adds. What separates yesterday\u2019s \u201cpatheticness from the right\u2019s embrace of \u2018freedom fries\u2019 to spite France in the early days of the Iraq war\u2019 is that the earlier nonsense was an \u201cinformal grassroots attempt to change the culture by pressuring people not to use the word \u2018French.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut \u2018Lake America\u2019? That\u2019s an official order from the president,\u201d said Catoggio. \u201cLet the culture take note.\u201d<\/p>\n

Worse, Trump\u2019s \u201cbratty\u201d Lake America \u2018fiasco\u2019 is ultimately an act of cowardice, said Catoggio.<\/p>\n

\u201c[C]ommitted nationalists aren\u2019t squeamish about sacrifice and immiseration. If they wanted to fight a trade war with Canada, they\u2019d go a lot further in escalating than hollow gestures involving lake names,\u201d said Catoggio. \u201cTrump is<\/em> squeamish, though. His brand of \u2018luxury nationalism\u2019 comes packaged with a con man\u2019s promise that Americans will suffer no enduring hardship from his agenda. He couldn\u2019t be any plainer than he\u2019s been this summer about how frightened he is by what protracted economic suffering caused by his policies might do to his legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Trump needs ways to look tough that won\u2019t cost Americans anything, said Catoggio, and erasing the word \u201cOntario\u201d from the Great Lakes is \u2018zero-calorie nationalism \u2014 unappetizing, unsatisfying, but chauvinistically nourishing with little downside.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly a pathetic and ignorant people would have fallen for [what Trump sells],\u201d Catoggio said, \u201cand only a really<\/em> pathetic and really<\/em> ignorant people would have fallen for it twice. Say what you will about Trump, but don\u2019t ever say that he hasn\u2019t delivered what Americans voted for.\u201d<\/p>\n
