In spite of President Donald Trump’s insistence that he still knows what MAGA wants, a new piece from The i Paper argued that he is now facing an “insurgency” from the movement he created as he continues to sow divisions.<\/p>\n

“With just over two months to go before voters are set to seal his fate in America\u2019s midterm elections, President Donald Trump is once again bucking tradition: instead of uniting his party around him and leading from the front, he has spent days stoking divisions among Republicans that could advance the day when the GOP splits asunder,” reporter Simon Marks wrote in the Tuesday piece, <\/p>\n

He later added, “last Friday night, the President fired the latest, dramatic salvo in his efforts to retain the leadership of a movement that shows every sign of fracturing beneath him. Amid collapsing trade talks with Canada, fresh revelations of the damage Iran has done to America\u2019s military infrastructure, and several days of primary contest losses for a host of Trump-backed Republican candidates, the President turned his social media blowtorch on ‘traitors’ around him.”<\/p>\n

Marks further argued that “Ground Zero” for the MAGA pushback against Trump could be traced back to Wyoming, “America’s reddest state,” earlier this year, when “five [GOP] lawmakers broke ranks and condemned the President for a social media post in which he compared himself to Jesus.” More recently, his endorsed candidate for governor in Wyoming “went down to a crushing defeat” against another Republican candidate “who pledged to lower the temperature of extremist debate in the state.”<\/p>\n

Marks also highlighted the Florida House race in which “antisemitic influencer Dan Bilzerian” sought to unseat incumbent Rep. Randy Fine, calling him a “Jewish supremacist” and attacking Trump as “nothing but a tool for Israeli hegemony.” While Bilzerian did not win the primary, Marks argued that his ability to secure 19 percent of the final vote offered “a fresh indication that Trump and his approved candidates are vulnerable to accusations that the President has betrayed MAGA and sold the movement out.”<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, three spurned former Trump supporters \u2014 Marjorie Taylor Greene, Thomas Massie and Tucker Carlson \u2014 shared a photo of a meeting together, amid rumors that they might be plotting the creation of a new political party to take on Trump and his remaining GOP elite backers. Trump himself was dismissive of this idea, lambasting the group as a bunch of “losers.”<\/p>\n

“Trump now finds himself confronting a paradox. In many ways, MAGA\u2019s greatest strength since he announced his presidential candidacy in 2015 has been the movement\u2019s ability to portray Republicans as a single insurgency seeking to overthrow an elitist radical-left establishment and the so-called ‘deep state,'” Marks concluded. “But today, Trump\u2019s control of MAGA is threatened by a fresh insurgency vowing to overturn the very Republican elite that he now leads. Containing those threats will be no small matter, as Carlson, Massie, Greene and others build support for their version of Trump\u2019s handmade political universe.<\/p>\n
