A conservative panel guest drew chuckles and derision during a recent CNN segment, with other panelists laughing in his face as he leapt to Donald Trump’s defense, claiming that he was the most “betrayed or backstabbed or<\/span> maligned and lied about” president.<\/span><\/p>\n

The incident took place during a segment on Wednesday’s edition of CNN This <\/em>Morning, <\/em>concerning reports that the Trump administration is considering a new policy to require federal workers to sign non-disclosure agreements, part of its ongoing obsession with stemming the tide of leaks. Per the reports, these workers would be required to “safeguard non-public, confidential or proprietary information, created or obtained through their official duties.”
<\/span><\/p>\n

Panelist Ron Brownstein, one of CNN’s senior political analysts, argued that this NDA proposal was “revealing” about how Trump views the value of a free press in a democratic society, as well as his belief that government employees work for him, and him alone. <\/span><\/p>\n

“This proposal is actually<\/span> very revealing, obviously,<\/span> first, about Trump’s view of the<\/span> media in a free society and a<\/span> democratic society, and how<\/span> limited his view of that is,” Brownstein said.<\/span> “But even more importantly, he<\/span> views the public sector<\/span> government employees not as<\/span> working for the public, but as<\/span> working for him… H<\/span><\/span>is<\/span> vision is that the<\/span> federal government is there to<\/span> execute his will, to reward his<\/span> friends, punish his enemies [and]<\/span> advance his goals with<\/span> essentially no obligation to the<\/span> public. And this is of a<\/span> piece, I think this is very kind<\/span> of philosophically consistent<\/span> with the way he views the Justice<\/span> Department and the way<\/span> he views all of the departments… This is his<\/span> vision of the federal<\/span> government, his extension of his<\/span> will with no independent<\/span> statutory or constitutional<\/span> obligation.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Later, Terry Schilling, a Republican political strategist and president of the American Principles Projecy, offered his defense of Trump’s mindset in approaching this new policy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“No one has<\/span> been betrayed or backstabbed or<\/span> maligned and lied about as<\/span> president more than President Trump,” Schilling said.<\/span> “I think that’s<\/span> undeniable.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To this, the other panelist in the segment, Democratic strategist Antjuan Seawright, was unable to stifle a laugh at Schilling’s expense.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“This is all<\/span> coming in light of the new<\/span> ballroom, by the way, which<\/span> needs to have NDAs around it,” Schilling continued.<\/span> “It’s a security measure for the White House<\/span> White House. You can’t know<\/span> everything about the white house<\/span> and its designs for it.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Host Audie Cornish appeared, at this point, to be incredulous about Schilling’s stance, suggesting that he had “100 percent trust in the government at<\/span> all times.” Schilling claimed he did not, but Cornish remained unconvinced.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
