On Thursday, the New York Times Journalist Maggie Haberman<\/u> \u2013 co-author of a bombshell book that exposed the Trump administration\u2019s dirty secrets \u2013 delivered a less-than-optimistic assessment of President Donald Trump\u2019s physical and mental state. After detailing a series of issues with Trump\u2019s fitness, she argued that his allies are \u201cnot transparent about his health.\u201d<\/p>\n

Haberman was speaking with former CNN White House Correspondent Jim Acosta, who asked a blunt question: \u201cMaggie, do you think that he\u2019s all there?\u201d<\/p>\n

After noting that she\u2019s not a doctor, Haberman asserted \u201cthere\u2019s no question\u201d that Trump has unexplained \u201cphysical problems.\u201d As she elaborated, \u201cThe bruising on the hands has been going on for two years, maybe a little under. The answer that we\u2019ve always gotten when we ask about it is that it\u2019s from handshaking\u2026That\u2019s always been a little hard to understand. He takes a very large aspirin regimen. Aspirin can be used as a blood thinner, but he is taking a dose that, according to what I have read from experts, is quite large. There is the swelling of the ankles. There\u2019s the eye closure, which is either sleeping or transcendental meditation or God knows what.\u201d She went on to describe times he\u2019s fallen asleep in court, noting, \u201cother times he was just closing his eyes and seemed to be just sort of putting himself somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here Haberman took issue with the White House\u2019s approach to Trump\u2019s fitness, saying, \u201cHe\u2019s 80 and they are not transparent about his health. He had been taking more frequent trips to Walter Reed and they have released less and less information. He said that he was seen by 22 specialists. I don\u2019t even know who that could be. But these are all valid questions for a president.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has been significant discussion of Trump\u2019s fitness for office over the past year due to a combination of his frequent, secretive hospital visits<\/u>, the swelling and bruising Haberman noted, and the growing number of \u201cred flags<\/u>\u201d regarding his behavior. Psychologists have suggested a possible \u201cneurodegenerative disorder<\/u>,\u201d and even a family member has raised the possibility of some \u201cundiagnosed condition<\/u>.\u201d<\/p>\n

For his part, Trump has claimed that he is in excellent health because he has \u201cvery good genetics,\u201d and has repeatedly bragged about having \u201caced\u201d a series of cognitive tests he took that are used for diagnosing dementia. Americans, however, do not agree<\/u> with Trump\u2019s claims, with 59 percent saying he lacks the mental sharpness to lead, and 55 percent saying he lacks the physical fitness necessary.<\/p>\n

Haberman says that while she\u2019s in no position to offer a clinical diagnosis, \u201cThere\u2019s a legitimate conversation out there about whether 80-year-olds are wise to keep electing.\u201d<\/p>\n
