Many of President Donald Trump\u2019s supporters don\u2019t care how corrupt and stupid he is \u2014 which gives him a layer of Teflon that other politicians don\u2019t enjoy. However, after serving in Trump\u2019s first term as chief of staff for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), whistleblower Miles Taylor says he knows exactly what kind of blows land on Trump.<\/p>\n

The Achilles\u2019 heel of autocrats is mockery, said Taylor. And Trump and his feather-thin skin is particularly sensitive to it.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrongmen can handle all the hatred because, weirdly (and this is Trump\u2019s long-standing view), the hatred confirms their power,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cWhat they actually have such a hard time with is laughter. When people point and laugh, they cower and quiver. The tactic is as old as time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor references historian Will Durant\u2019s Heroes of History<\/em>, where Durant notes how the earliest comedians worked their art tearing down political monsters in ancient Athens, wielding humor as a powerful weapon to expose corruption and greed.<\/p>\n

\u201cNone landed a harder blow than Aristophanes, who tormented the tyrants of Athens from the stage,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cAmidst a foreign conflict that threatened to bring down the fledgling Athenian democracy, the playwright\u2019s productions were purported to be \u2018brilliant, coarse, and merciless,\u2019 Durant wrote, \u2018calling for a return to an almost forgotten morality, and crying for an end to war.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cOr fast forward to when Charlie Chaplin famously punctured Hitler\u2019s mystique, while half the world still appeased the thuggish mustached man,\u201d continued Taylor. \u201cOr consider the example of two of my contemporary favorites: (1) Alexei Navalny, who did more damage to Putin with one video mocking his gaudy secret palace than a decade of communiqu\u00e9s ever did; and (2) Volodymyr Zelensky, a comedian who once played a president on television, and who has out-dueled the Kremlin for four years running as the actual president of Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is a reason that Chinese tyrant Xi Jinping bans \u201cWinnie the Pooh memes\u201d and Turkey President Recep Erdogan prosecutes comedians, said the DHS researcher: The ridicule works.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump understands this instinctively, which is why the briefest, winking mention of \u2018Natalie\u2019 [Harp] in Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff\u2019s speech produced a coordinated White House meltdown,\u201d said Taylor. \u201cOssoff found the nerve, and \u2014 oh boy \u2014 it connected with the whole body of Trump\u2019s corruption. Now, the president is screaming in agony.\u201d<\/p>\n

But instead, Taylor points out that Democrats have spent most of the last decade of Trump\u2019s career \u201cdrafting strongly worded letters and waiting for our institutions to save us.\u201d<\/p>\n

But turn on the humor and nasty insinuations and Republicans are suddenly \u201cpearl \u2026 clutching\u201d and claiming they are \u201cshocked \u2014 shocked!<\/em> \u2014 that anyone would insinuate impropriety by a convicted felon and adjudicated sexual abuser who hires people like Natalie to serve under him,\u201d said Taylor.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s opponent doesn\u2019t even have to be a trained comedian, added Taylor. Just put yourself out there \u201cwith the swagger of Aristophanes by pointedly naming the enablers, mocking the corrupt, and smiling wryly as Trump and his minions demand apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

All one Democratic Georgia senator had to do, for example, was take \u201cdocumented reporting of Trump\u2019s corruption (including the secret flights, the ballroom obsession, the golf, the stock trades, the war he\u2019s losing, and the weird stories about his too-adoring personal assistant) and compress \u2026 it into one sentence that delivered a hornet sting to the wannabe dictator in the White House,\u201d according to Taylor.<\/p>\n
