On Wednesday, President Donald Trump made a statement regarding the state of North Korea\u2019s nuclear arsenal that has commentators warning that he may have revealed classified information. He was delivering an impromptu press tour of a new helipad installed on the White House grounds when he declared that North Korea has \u201c57 very powerful nuclear weapons\u201d \u2013 a number that had not been made public previously. <\/p>\n

The revelation came after Trump was asked whether he was exchanging letters with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un \u2013 a reference to the \u201clove letters\u201d the president claimed he received from Kim during his first term. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you that,\u201d Trump shrugged. \u201cThe fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons. Should have never allowed it to happen. They should have never allowed it, but he\u2019s got em. I get along with him very well.\u201d <\/p>\n

“Well,” posted Atlantic columnist Tom Nichols. “I guess *that* number isn’t classified anymore.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s declassified now,\u201d agreed HuffPost White House Correspondent S.V. Date. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe declassified it with his mind,\u201d joked one commenter, referring to Trump\u2019s 2022 assertion<\/u> that he could declassify information \u201ceven by thinking about it.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou can tell when he’s accidentally revealed classified information because he’ll give an actual specific number instead of a vague range that he makes up on the spot,\u201d suggested another. <\/p>\n

According to Wall Street Journal National Security reporter Alex Ward<\/u>, the only publicly released number was an estimation of 60, \u201cthough some analysts suspect it is far higher now.\u201d As Ward notes, Trump also told the press that he will meet with Kim Jong-Un before the year is out.<\/p>\n

All of this comes in the wake of Trump\u2019s announcement<\/u> that the U.S. would \u201csubstantially reduce\u201d its role in military exercises with South Korea<\/u> over its lack of participation in the war with Iran. Trump declared that North Korea, on the other hand, has been \u201cunthreatening and respectful,\u201d and that he has a \u201cvery good relationship\u201d with its autocratic leader. <\/p>\n

In reality, as National Review reporter Noah Rothman has reported<\/u>, North Korea has actually become \u201cmore hostile in recent years\u201d as it prepares for \u201can aggressive war.\u201d And while Trump has repeatedly declared that his top priority is to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, he is now cozying up to North Korea \u2013 one of the world\u2019s most notorious nuclear proliferators \u2013 which happened to have made many of its key nuclear advances during Trump\u2019s first term. <\/p>\n
