In the United States, daylight savings time ends on Sunday, November 1 \u2014 only two days before the 2026 midterms. President Donald Trump would like to make daylight savings time permanent and year-round, but according to The Hill’s Alexander Bolton, he is “running into stiff opposition from GOP senators whose states would be plunged into early-morning darkness during the winter.”<\/p>\n

Lawmakers have already passed a daylight savings bill in the U.S. House of Representatives, where Republicans enjoy a small majority that Democrats are hoping to eliminate on November 3. But the bill, dubbed the Sunshine Protection Act of 2026, is stalled in the U.S. Senate, and Bolton notes that Trump is “renewing pressure on Senate Republicans to pass a House-approved bill to make daylight saving time permanent.”<\/p>\n

In a Wednesday, August 12 post on his Truth Social platform, Trump argued that “people are sick and tired of having to change their clocks twice a year” \u2014 claiming that the end of daylight savings time in early November is “bad for your health in the anxiety it creates.”<\/p>\n

Trump posted, “This is an issue that Republicans, Dumocrats, and Independents can unite behind. I am asking Republican Senators to PASS THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT, ASAP.”<\/p>\n

Bolton, in The Hill, reports, “It was a message similar to one the president sent last week and suggests he’s not about to let the issue go. The House passed the bill a month ago to make daylight saving time permanent with a strong bipartisan majority of 308 to 117.”<\/p>\n

GOP sources in the Senate, according to Bolton, “say the legislation would not be able to pass the upper chamber with unanimous consent and warn that pushing it to the floor under regular order would take up at least a week of the Senate’s time.”<\/p>\n

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) voiced his objections to making daylight savings time year-round during a recent appearance on conservative Hugh Hewitt’s radio show.<\/p>\n

The GOP senator told Hewitt, “You have to think through the second-order implications of what permanent daylight savings would mean. It may sound great in the summer months, and it may sound great if you live in Florida and you like to play golf. But if you live in Bentonville, Arkansas, the sun wouldn’t come up in the depths of winter until well after 8 o’clock \u2014 maybe even 8:30.”<\/p>\n

Cotton continued, “There are places throughout the Midwest and the Rocky Mountain states that wouldn’t see the sun until 9, 9:30, almost 10 o’clock, in some cases. That would be very dangerous, especially for kids who are walking to school, biking to school, being left at bus stops\u2026. This is one of those issues that is more of a regional issue than it is a partisan issue.”<\/p>\n
