But even though President Donald Trump and the chaos politics surrounding him and the White House did not factor into the isolated world of the northeastern island that served as Widow\u2019s Bay\u2019s<\/em> setting there was no banishing the controversial president form the exchange.<\/p>\n

As they discussed the popularity of Widow\u2019s Bay, Russell said she appreciated the \u201cescape\u201d the show provided the audience \u2014 even if it buries modern American politics in the drip-drip creepiness that plagues the beleaguered island inhabitants.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s also such a delightful departure from the s\u2014\u2014 that we\u2019re in,\u201d Russell told Variety. \u201cDo you know what I mean? There is not a mention in the show so far for me about what\u2019s happening \u2014 the destruction of our country,\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cRight?\u201d she added, laughing \u201cmordantly\u201d according to Variety.<\/p>\n

But Rhys disagreed, telling her that there was in fact one character in the series that reminded him of the make-up wearing White House occupant. <\/p>\n

\u201cWell, there is,\u201d said Rhys, referring to the ghost of a clown that murdered children decades ago and who now lurks and heaves around in a dark basement containing his desiccated corpse. \u201cIn the crawlspace. That\u2019s Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

The interviewer noted that Russell seemed \u201cdismayed\u201d by the revelation. Her own show, the Diplomat, is set in a world of high-stakes international intrigue and smartly run government, \u201cas we imagine it being practiced in a pre-MAGA era,\u201d according to Variety.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can feel as if no time has passed since \u2018The West Wing\u2019 or \u2018Homeland,\u2019 both of which \u201cDiplomat \u2018 creator Debra Cahn wrote for.<\/p>\n
