It\u2019s no secret that President Donald Trump enjoys praise and adoration, but according to Nobel-winning economist Paul Krugman<\/u>, this is no mere vanity, but part of a \u201cflattery-failure doom loop\u201d that is burning the country down. <\/p>\n

Citing a recent New York Times piece<\/u> entitled \u201cTrump Is the Only Person Who Can Save America, According to His Cabinet,\u201d Krugman notes that an average of one in six statements made by the president\u2019s officials during Cabinet meetings is intended to either flatter Trump or attack his opponents. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis \u2018Dear Leader\u2019 treatment is unprecedented in American history,\u201d notes Krugman. \u201cRegardless of how successful, no previous president has been showered with this kind of obsequiousness and deification.\u201d<\/p>\n

And what\u2019s more, no one \u201coutside the MAGA bubble\u201d is being fooled. <\/p>\n

\u201cAmericans are increasingly seeing Trump as the loser he is,\u201d writes Krugman. \u201cHe has failed on every front. Manufacturing employment is down, inflation is outpacing wages, consumer sentiment is at a record low, mortgage rates are up. Trump\u2019s war of choice has led to utter humiliation. According to current polls, Americans are giving Trump extremely low approval ratings, both overall and on every major issue \u2014 even border security.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet still, within \u201cthe MAGA fantasy bubble,\u201d Trump is \u201chailed, almost literally, as the Second Coming.\u201d His \u201cpersonality cult\u201d has become so fanatical, says Krugman, that Republicans have begun to treat him as more of a monarch to whom they should surrender their role as an independent branch of government. <\/p>\n

As evidence of this, he nods to a recent post from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who declared, \u201cPresident Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran\u2026 to the negotiating table.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen prominent people in a republic act as if they were living in a monarchy,\u201d Krugman warns, \u201cthe republic increasingly becomes a monarchy in reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

He says that Republicans on the Supreme Court have done even more harm in this regard: \u201cRight-wing legal thinkers have increasingly embraced \u2018unitary executive theory,\u2019 under which the entire executive branch \u2014 including agencies Congress has designated as independent \u2014 answers personally to the president, who can hire and fire officials at will. The Roberts Court hasn\u2019t explicitly endorsed this theory. But the Court has given presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts \u2014 effectively placing Trump above the law. And Roberts has declared that the president is \u2018the only person who alone composes a branch of government,\u2019 which, combined with the subservience of both Congress and the Court itself, does in effect make Trump a dictator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krugman asserts that the fusion of \u201cflattery and failure\u201d that has developed under \u201cAmerica\u2019s most incompetent modern president\u201d is no accident, but part of a \u201cself-reinforcing doom loop.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cTrump needs and demands sycophantic praise and unfettered power in part to compensate for the fact that he\u2019s such an objective failure,\u201d Krugman concludes. \u201cAnd while his manifest unfitness is part of the explanation for his failure, his policy disasters also have a lot to do with the bubble that surrounds him. Nobody dares to tell him when he\u2019s wrong. Nobody can stop him from indulging his whims, no matter how disastrous their consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n
