Writing at The Bulwark, Bill Kristol is pointing to three Republican Senators who over recent days told the truth about President Donald Trump\u2019s war in Iran and possible deals to end it. The longtime conservative columnist who recently became a Democrat calls their remarks a \u201cbrief spasm of Republican truth-telling,\u201d and \u201ca step on the road to recovery\u201d but warns that \u201cthe damage that\u2019s been done is real.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker (R-MS) on Friday warned that Trump was \u201cbeing ill advised to pursue a deal that would not be worth the paper it is written on. Further pursuit of an agreement with Iran\u2019s Islamist regime risks a perception of weakness.\u201d<\/p>\n

One day later, Wicker continued his warning: \u201cThe rumored 60-day ceasefire \u2014 with the belief that Iran will ever engage in good faith \u2014 would be a disaster. Everything accomplished by Operation Epic Fury would be for naught!\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) also weighed in, saying he was \u201cdeeply concerned about what we are hearing about an Iran \u2018deal,\u2019 being pushed by some voices in the administration.\u201d<\/p>\n

He called Trump\u2019s decision to strike Iran \u201cthe most consequential decision of his second term,\u201d but also issued a warning:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the result of all that is to be an Iranian regime\u2014still run by Islamists who chant \u2018death to America\u2019\u2014now receiving billions of dollars, being able to enrich uranium & develop nuclear weapons, and having effective control over the Strait of Hormuz, then that outcome would be a disastrous mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kristol also pointed to \u201clickspittle extraordinaire\u201d U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who dared to issue criticism.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a deal is struck to end the Iranian conflict because it is believed that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be protected from Iranian terrorism and Iran still possesses the capability to destroy major Gulf oil infrastructure,\u201d Graham said, \u201cthen Iran will be perceived as being a dominate [sic] force requiring a diplomatic solution.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham also mused, \u201cit makes one wonder why the war started to begin with if these perceptions are accurate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kristol answered Graham\u2019s musing: \u201cThe war started because Trump and his administration are foolish and reckless and hubristic, and those in a position to check him\u2014like Sens. Wicker and Cruz and Graham\u2014have utterly failed to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
