President Donald Trump\u2019s determination to blame the botched Reflecting Pool renovation on anyone but himself has fallen apart, with his US Attorney Jeanine Pirro dropping cases earlier this week against the wrongfully accused, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn.<\/p>\n

Now a new report reveals that Trump\u2019s \u201cfury\u201d over Pirro\u2019s dismissals of the cases reveals that his obsession with weaponizing the Justice Department against foes.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeanine Pirro has pushed a slew of flimsy, short-lived, Trump-endorsed prosecutions \u2014 but Trump’s fury over her failure to prosecute Reflecting Pool vandalism is a sign of his second-term obsession and desire to use [Department of Justice] to fulfill it,\u201d Politico reporter Kyle Cheney posted on X on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

In his Politico report, Cheney and fellow Politico journalist Josh Gerstein broke down the fallout of Pirro\u2019s failure to blame others for the Reflecting Pool renovation blunders.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeanine Pirro\u2019s focus on murders and other major crimes in Washington has helped President Donald Trump deliver on his pledge to go after violent offenders in the nation\u2019s capital \u2014 work he often touts publicly,\u201d Cheney and Gerstein wrote. \u201cBut her moves to advance Trump\u2019s personal and political grievances have flopped \u2014 drawing Trump\u2019s public frustration and potentially putting her job at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also pointed out that \u201cPirro\u2019s decision to concede in court that vandals didn\u2019t cause high-profile damage to the Reflecting Pool \u2014 and Trump\u2019s fury over that decision \u2014 is just the latest in a string of cases in which Pirro, the U.S. attorney for D.C., has given up on a long-shot prosecution demanded by Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though \u201cPirro enthusiastically supported Trump\u2019s dubious claims that vandals were responsible for widespread damage to a liner in the Reflecting Pool,\u201d she eventually determined the cases were unwinnable because of \u201cextensive evidence of pre-existing damage to the pool\u2019s coating.\u201d Trump responded to her decision in a Monday press conference by saying Pirro \u201cchoked\u201d and he was \u201creally disappointed\u201d in the former Fox News host and judge.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump\u2019s response to Pirro\u2019s decision to drop the case \u2014 after prosecutors revealed they didn\u2019t have the goods on the man they hit with a felony charge \u2014 was palpably more intense than his reaction after other failed prosecutions,\u201d Gerstein and Cheney wrote.<\/p>\n

They continued, \u201cBecause U.S. attorneys have some autonomy about when to bring cases and how to handle them, it\u2019s difficult to know how much involvement other DOJ officials \u2014 such as acting Attorney General Todd Blanche \u2014 had in the Reflecting Pool cases or other politically sensitive inquiries Pirro has overseen.\u201d<\/p>\n
