This morning, while standing in line at a local deli, I met an older couple named Larry and Wendy. They are from Galveston, Texas, and are briefly in northern California visiting their children.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognized you,\u201d Larry said, with a broad smile. \u201cJust want you to know we\u2019re Democrats! Can\u2019t admit that to too many people in Texas!\u201d he laughed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to California!\u201d I said, grinning and extending my hand. <\/p>\n

When Larry reached out, I couldn\u2019t help notice that his fingers were almost curved shut. \u201cArthritis,\u201d he said defensively. \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing to apologize for,\u201d I said quickly. \u201cMust be painful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, yes,\u201d Larry said, adding, \u201cDoesn\u2019t stop me, though!\u201d<\/p>\n

I must have looked puzzled because Wendy chimed in, \u201cWe write postcards.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPostcards?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe wrote postcards all July to people in North Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me more,\u201d I asked. <\/p>\n

Larry explained: \u201cWe get their names and addresses from our local Indivisible chapter. They\u2019re people who haven\u2019t voted in the last several elections, so we remind them to vote and tell them how crucial this upcoming election will be. The postcards will be delivered in October.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got a big election coming up in Texas, too,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n

Wendy smiled. \u201cIn June, before we wrote to North Carolinians, we wrote to people in our part of Texas,\u201d she said, proudly. <\/p>\n

I must have glanced at Larry\u2019s hand, because he quickly said, \u201cIt\u2019s been a bit difficult, but, hell, it\u2019s the least I can do.\u201d<\/p>\n

We continued talking until it was their turn to pick up their order. Then they turned to say goodbye. <\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate your activism,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s for our kids and grandkids,\u201d Larry said. \u201cI wish we could do more.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been thinking about Larry and Wendy from Galveston, and how their postcards written by hand to people in North Carolina and Texas are acts of patriotism in these dark times. Larry has been writing them through his pain. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s war is a fiasco, and his economy is a disaster. According to The Washington Post,<\/em> Republican pollsters and political groups are raising the alarm that Republican voters are listless and demotivated.<\/p>\n

Yet Trump will do everything and anything to maintain control. He has shown repeatedly that he doesn\u2019t feel bound by laws, norms, or patriotism. His only goals are wealth, power, and vengeance. <\/p>\n

His billionaire backers, including Elon Musk, are prepared to sink record amounts of money into Republican campaigns.<\/p>\n

Trump and his backers have power, money, and ruthlessness on their side. <\/p>\n

But we have the people on ours. <\/p>\n

It will be a colossal stress test of our electoral system. But I believe We the People will prevail. And after speaking with Larry and Wendy this morning, I\u2019m convinced of it. <\/p>\n
