Conservative Dispatch columnist Nick Catoggio says non-MAGA mutiny is finally burying President Donald Trump and his Republican machine, and of course<\/em> Trump has only himself and his venal personal interest to blame.<\/p>\n

Well \u2026 that and war.<\/p>\n

Interpreting polls is usually a \u201cfool\u2019s errand,\u201d said Catoggio, but there\u2019s no denying the numbers when they\u2019re splashing one bucket of slop after another on your head, as Trump\u2019s personal popularity appears to be doing. Trump\u2019s job approval frequently dips below 40 percent, but it\u2019s very unusual<\/em> for him to fall as low as 35 percent \u2014 and he\u2019s done it three times in the last nine national surveys. <\/p>\n

This, said Catoggio, means some \u201cmeaningful segment of his base appears to have left him,\u201d and Fox News knows exactly who it is.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m tempted to speculate that the mutineers are \u2026 Reaganite conservatives whose tribal tether to the GOP has been snapping, strand by strand, over the past 10 years as the weight of their disgust at the state of the right has grown. At last, perhaps, the final atavistic strand has broken,\u201d said Catoggio, pointing to 18 percent of conservatives preferring Democratic Texas senatorial candidate James Talarico.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt ain\u2019t just the RINOs who are tilting Democratic this time,\u201d Catoggio said. \u201cGOP operatives are worried about it too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Internal data shared with the Washington Post<\/em> last week revealed a \u201clack of enthusiasm reaching deep into Republicans\u2019 loyal base, spreading to the party\u2019s most consistent voters \u2014 who have shown up to vote in all of the past four primaries and general elections.\u201d <\/p>\n

One director of an outside right-wing group estimated about 1 in 5 \u201creliable Republican base voters\u201d in battleground states are considering staying home in November or voting for a Democrat.<\/p>\n

This group includes Reaganites, as well as \u201cRoganites,\u201d the Joe Rogan demographic of young men who came for the lower inflation and the decimation of \u201cwoke\u201d policies, not continued high prices and war. And you can round things off with freshly hateful Hispanics who still identify as Republican but can\u2019t stand Trump.<\/p>\n

Of course, this is about the war, which Catoggio describes as a \u201cfiasco\u201d and \u201cthe biggest policy blunder in either of Trump\u2019s terms in office. \u2026 And practically every voter in America, left or right, understands that it\u2019s hurting their personal bottom line by driving up gas prices and inflation more broadly.\u201d<\/p>\n

But then there\u2019s the corruption, he added, which has \u201cat last grown so promiscuous and degenerate that even elements of the lowly American right have begun to feel sick about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m inclined to dismiss that theory, having been conditioned by the last 10 years to believe there\u2019s literally no behavior so diseased that Republicans won\u2019t overlook or excuse it to preserve a partisan advantage,\u201d said Catoggio, but everybody appears to have their limit.<\/p>\n

Take Trump\u2019s \u201ccash for MAGA criminals\u201d slush fund, as Catoggio calls it. The same law inoculates Trump and his family from future IRS scrutiny. And two GOP senators, as a condition of supporting Trump\u2019s AG nominee Todd Blanche, are demanding in writing that the thing is dead, but Trump won\u2019t allow it.<\/p>\n

\u201cForced to choose between getting his nominee confirmed and protecting an indefensibly corrupt abuse of power that places him beyond legal accountability for financial crimes, he\u2019s prioritizing corruption,\u201d said Catoggio. \u201c\u2026All they want from Trump and his deputy is a written promise that he won\u2019t proceed with it if they vote yes. And still, he won\u2019t do it. There is no public interest that he values more highly than his venal and vindictive personal interests, and the evidence of that has grown so overwhelming lately that even some Republican voters might be struggling to cope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Catoggio said he believes they\u2019re mostly fine with letting Trump \u201cbehave as corruptly as he likes, as that\u2019s part of the unstated price of admission in this rotten coalition.\u201d But some non-MAGA Republicans\u2019 loyalty was always conditional on cheaper groceries and may have grown embarrassed by the president being so open about corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s flaunting the impunity they\u2019ve granted him, almost daring them to do something about it,\u201d said Catoggio. \u201cMaybe they will.\u201d<\/p>\n
