Much has been said about how President Donald Trump\u2019s claims often don\u2019t correspond with reality, but according to Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman<\/u>, it\u2019s inaccurate to say that Trump is merely lying. Instead, there is an alarmingly \u201cextreme\u201d reason Trump and his MAGA followers reject objective fact. <\/p>\n

As Krugman explained on Thursday, MAGA is characterized by a denial of reality. Krugman offers no shortage of examples:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Covid vaccine didn\u2019t work, and vaccines cause autism<\/u>. But hydroxychloroquine<\/u> worked, and so did ivermectin. Anthony Fauci killed millions of people<\/u>. Climate change is a hoax. Wind power caused a massive TV blackout<\/u> during the Trump-Biden debate. Solar power is useless because the sun doesn\u2019t shine at night, and batteries don\u2019t exist. Smoke blanketed North America, not because of climate change, but because Canada didn\u2019t rake<\/u> its 2 million square miles of boreal forest. We\u2019ve destroyed Iran\u2019s military, and the Iranian regime is begging for a deal. Also, the U.S. isn\u2019t running out of precision weapons as a result of the Iran war, and furthermore the shortage is Joe Biden\u2019s fault. The economy is in a ‘golden age.’ Prices are down. And Trump has a 59 percent approval rating<\/u>. Trump won the 2020 election. Communism is the greatest threat facing America.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

With all this in mind, writes Krugman, \u201cWhat Trump and his supporters hate most of all is reality. They know what they want to believe. They fly into paroxysms of rage whenever someone points out that the world isn\u2019t what they want it to be. And they always want to shoot the messenger.\u201d He notes that while anyone can experience a bout of wishful thinking, \u201cwhat we\u2019re seeing now isn\u2019t run-of-the-mill motivated reasoning. It\u2019s something far more extreme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here Krugman brings up author George Orwell, who famously described this situation, writing, \u201cIn the past people deliberately lied, or they unconsciously coloured what they wrote, or they struggled after the truth, well knowing that they must make many mistakes; but in each case they believed that \u2018the facts\u2019 existed and were more or less discoverable. And in practice there was always a considerable body of fact which would have been agreed to by almost everyone.” <\/p>\n

\u201cTotalitarians, however,\u201d writes Krugman, \u201cdenied that objective facts existed. Furthermore, reality is mutable, changing with the leader\u2019s whims.\u201d As Orwell put it, \u201cIf the Leader says of such and such an event, \u2018It never happened\u2019 \u2013 well, it never happened. If he says that two and two are five \u2013 well, two and two are five.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krugman asserts that the GOP has proven surprisingly susceptible to this \u201ctotalitarian mindset,\u201d noting as an example how \u201cthey behave as if they were courtiers to Kim Jong Un. Trump speeches are sometimes followed by \u2018endless applause moments<\/u>,\u2019 because none of Trump\u2019s loyalists wants to be seen as the first person to stop clapping.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Krugman, Americans are paying a real cost for MAGA\u2019s \u201cwar on reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRemember,\u201d he writes, \u201c1.2 million Americans died from Covid \u2014 a number that would have been much lower if MAGA misinformation hadn\u2019t caused so many people to refuse vaccination. Now we\u2019re seeing a frightening rise in measles and other infectious diseases, and God help us if another pandemic strikes with Trump or his successor still in charge. Climate denial and hostility to renewable energy will mean more pollution even as it consigns the U.S. to energy and economic backwardness. And the Iran war \u2014 which Trump started and now refuses to end because he won\u2019t accept reality \u2014 has destroyed America\u2019s credibility and depleted our weapon stocks with stunning speed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut,\u201d Krugman concludes with grim jest, \u201canyone pointing out the obvious is, of course, a Communist.\u201d<\/p>\n
