Over the course of his war with Iran, President Donald Trump has made inflammatory remarks that many have suggested implied his intention to use nuclear weapons<\/u>. Now a whistleblower from his first term warns that he \u201cwatched Donald Trump talk about nuclear weapons like they were presidential toys,\u201d and that \u201che may be closer to playing with them than you think.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is according to Miles Taylor<\/u>, who served as deputy chief of staff at the Department of National Security during Trump\u2019s first administration, at the time famously penning an anonymous article revealing the existence of a resistance movement working within the White House. On Monday, he published a new piece<\/u> explaining why Trump has a \u201cfixation\u201d with using nuclear weapons. <\/p>\n

\u201cLast week,\u201d writes Taylor, \u201cthe president told Axios<\/u> he was \u2018close\u2019 to ordering a \u2018massive attack\u2019 on Iran \u2026 The threat had the same ominous feel of his April comments that \u2018a whole civilization will die tonight.\u2019 It was an insinuation that he possessed super powers \u2014 and might break the world\u2019s nuclear taboo to end the stalemate.\u201d The pause didn\u2019t mean the war was off, however, and Trump told Axios why he thought the war had to continue: \u201cThey haven\u2019t received enough pain yet.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot enough pain,\u201d notes Taylor. \u201cI\u2019ve heard rhetoric like that from him before. And it wasn\u2019t about Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBack in 2017,\u201d Taylor explains, \u201cTrump judged that the only way to bring North Korea to heel was to make it suffer. He tweeted furiously at \u2018Rocketman\u2019 Kim Jong-un and promised \u2018fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before\u2019 if the hermit kingdom didn\u2019t meet his demands. That was Trump\u2019s first wink-nod to the fact that he possessed an arsenal of nuclear bombs and was ready to use them. Kim answered by threatening to fire missiles at Guam and testing a nuclear-capable missile that could strike the U.S. mainland.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor says the situation escalated so rapidly that Defense Secretary James Mattis began preparing DHS officials for an all-out nuclear war. \u201cFor the first time in the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s history, we ran exercises<\/u> for a potential real-life nuclear strike on American soil, because frankly, we couldn\u2019t rule out that our own president might take us into such an apocalyptic situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Taylor, the president\u2019s motivation was simple: \u201cTrump wanted to see something blow up, and the rest of us built contingency plans around that desire. Thankfully, he didn\u2019t launch nukes at North Korea. But General Mattis also isn\u2019t at the Pentagon anymore. \u2018Pistol Pete\u2019 Hegseth is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor asserts that \u201cTrump\u2019s nuclear fantasies go way back. When he was a candidate in 2016, MSNBC\u2019s Joe Scarborough said a foreign policy adviser had come away from a briefing with Trump rattled, because Trump asked<\/u>, three separate times, some version of the question: \u2018If we have nuclear weapons, why can\u2019t we use them?\u2019 Candidate Trump also told The New York Times<\/u> he wasn\u2019t sure it \u2018would be a bad thing for us\u2019 if Japan built its own nuclear deterrent against North Korea, and he told CNN\u2019s Anderson Cooper<\/u> that Saudi Arabia should have nukes, too, \u2018absolutely.\u2019\u201d And \u201csince then, Trump has toyed with nuclear weapons more openly and more recklessly than any American president ever entrusted with the stewardship of the bomb.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, amid an \u201cunresolved war with Iran,\u201d warns Taylor, \u201cyou get the picture of a president who\u2019s just one mood swing away from putting his finger on the proverbial red button.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor says that Trump\u2019s motivation is not difficult to grasp, writing, \u201cDonald Trump has spent his entire presidency on a power quest, always hunting for the next most powerful thing he can do. And nuclear weapons are at the top of that list. To say that he\u2019s \u2018toying\u2019 with extreme powers is probably the wrong phraseology. He\u2019s addicted to power. Very much like it\u2019s an intoxicant. When his own chief of staff, Susie Wiles, told<\/u> The Atlantic that her boss had an \u2018alcoholic\u2019s personality,\u2019 it wasn\u2019t a mere slip of the tongue. That\u2019s how everyone who\u2019s served the man has come to see him \u2026 He has an uncontrollable, pathological, junkie-like urge to power.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf deploying troops to seize foreign leaders and raining missiles on other nations isn\u2019t cutting it anymore,\u201d Taylor concludes. \u201cI worry about where the quest leads next.
