Some of President Donald Trump\u2019s most prominent right-wing supporters are denouncing director Christopher Nolan\u2019s adaptation of \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d because of its diverse casting. Yet one conservative commentator says they could actually learn an important \u201csmall-c conservative\u201d lesson about Trump\u2019s billions in grifting from watching it.<\/p>\n

\u201cA president enriches himself at a scale never seen before in the United States. An Epstein class of abusive libertines always seems to evade accountability for its crimes,\u201d conservative columnist David French wrote for The New York Times on Sunday. \u201cGovernment officials break the law with impunity, banking on presidential pardons to excuse their crimes \u2014 all while truth is buried under an avalanche of lies, lies that are shared with gusto by cadres of grifters and fools.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWithout saying one word about modern politics, Christopher Nolan has rebuked the spirit of the age. His retelling of \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 is an admonition: Moral transgressions always carry a consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n

French went on to describe how Odysseus, as depicted by Nolan, is haunted morally and practically by his decision to violate Zeus\u2019 law. In ancient Greece, individuals were expected to show hospitality when faced with guests and to be hospitable if they are guests. By invading Troy by hiding in a supposedly gifted wooden horse, Odysseus and his men violated this rule by being the least hospitable type of guest \u2014 that is, one who murders, steals and destroys everything he can. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn the movie\u2019s powerful third act (spoiler alert, for those who care about spoiling a modern take on an almost 3,000-year-old epic poem), Odysseus connects all the dots,\u201d French wrote. \u201cThe Trojan War wasn\u2019t a great victory conducted in service of a righteous cause. It was a war fought for greed and power under the pretext of fighting to bring Helen of Troy home.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cAnd the Trojan Horse? Odysseus\u2019s strategic masterstroke? In Nolan\u2019s depiction, it is essentially a war crime \u2014 an act of subterfuge that takes advantage of ancient customs to unleash the horrifying sack of the city after Troy\u2019s army is defeated. Odysseus is determined to get home, but he is also wracked with guilt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because Odysseus committed these horrible acts, French explained, Nolan concludes his version of the Homeric poem by not having Odysseus \u201ccome home to Ithaca to sit on his throne, but to confess, to rescue his wife from the clutches of evil men and to choose exile.\u201d From there he pointed out that \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d actually has a fundamentally conservative message, despite right-wingers like X CEO Elon Musk and The Daily Wire commentator Matt Walsh complaining about its diverse casting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a reminder of how stupid and petty much of the right has become that anyone would think this movie was \u2018woke,\u2019\u201d French wrote. \u201cYes, a Black actor \u2014 Lupita Nyong\u2019o \u2014 plays Helen of Troy, and a trans actor \u2014 Elliot Page \u2014 plays Sinon, the Greek warrior who unwittingly tricks the Trojans into accepting the Trojan Horse as a gift. But to label a movie woke simply because of the identity of the actors is to indulge in a caricatured version of the same identity politics that the right claims to loathe.\u201d<\/p>\n

French instead argued that \u201cin reality, Nolan\u2019s \u2018Odyssey\u2019 is one of the most small-c conservative movies I\u2019ve ever seen. I can easily imagine a natural law theorist watching the movie, nodding his head and saying, \u2018Yes, there are universal moral laws, and this is exactly what happens when prideful men believe they know more than God.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

This means that \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d issues a warning for Trump and his cohorts, who are blatantly profiting from Trump\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefy the gods? Deny the dignity of your neighbor?\u201d French wrote. \u201cYou certainly can, if you so choose. And you may prosper for a time. But the narrative arc of the movie tells us our destiny if that\u2019s the path we choose. It turns out that there are rules for rule breakers, just as there are for everyone else, and those rules have persisted throughout human history.\u201d<\/p>\n

He concluded, \u201cHere\u2019s one, arguably the central truth of the film: Heedless people, you will pay for what you destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition to the conservative French, the liberal commentator Thom Hartmann similarly opined that \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d has valuable lessons for people who are open to it, especially on the Trump right.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you go to see Christopher Nolan\u2019s new epic film \u2018The Odyssey\u2019 (as Louise and I did on Saturday), you\u2019ll be bathed in the revelation that Trump and his military lickspittles are breaking the most ancient law that created what we today call Western civilization,\u201d Hartmann wrote. \u201cThe movie even explains Iran\u2019s rageful response to Trump\u2019s violations of \u2018Zeus\u2019 Law\u2019 and tells us of the possible consequences of his illegal and morally criminal attack on that country (which had not attacked us first) as his war of choice plays out.\u201d<\/p>\n

As both French and Hartmann noted in their editorials, conservatives have had a meltdown over \u201cThe Odyssey,\u201d complaining that it is \u201cwoke\u201d because of Nolan\u2019s casting choices. Nolan himself dismissed the criticisms as \u201cirrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Daily Beast reported earlier this month, \u201cHis comments come after MAGA commentators \u2014 including X owner Elon Musk \u2014 trashed the film for months over Nolan\u2019s choice to cast Lupita Nyong\u2019o as Helen of Troy and trans actor Elliot Page as the Greek warrior Sinon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMusk, Newsmax host Robert Finnerty, and more have slammed the film, which isn\u2019t out until July 17, as a \u2018rewriting of history\u2019 and Nolan as \u2018racist\u2019 for casting a Black actress in a fictional Greek character\u2019s role,\u201d The Daily Beast continued.<\/p>\n
