Daily Mail White House columnist Andrew Neil says he is in direct talks with people working around President Donald Trump and they fear they are watching his mind wither away as international forces that he aggravated gather against him.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Donald is deteriorating before our very eyes,\u2019 I was told in Washington this week by a close confidant who sees him regularly. \u2018His physical and mental health is in decline. Those around him don\u2019t know what to do about it. It can only get worse. He\u2019s 80 \u2013 and it\u2019s showing,\u2019\u201d wrote Neil on Friday.<\/p>\n

The war isn\u2019t just consuming Trump\u2019s presidency, said Neil. It\u2019s taking its toll on the President himself. <\/p>\n

\u201cDuring a recent meeting in the Oval Office, he ranted against Iran\u2019s leaders, calling them \u2018scumbags\u2019 and \u2018lunatics\u2019 in an expletive-ridden diatribe. There is growing concern for his physical health and mental stability,\u201d said Neil. \u201c\u2026 But it\u2019s not just age \u2013 or the decline in cognitive capabilities that can afflict those entering their ninth decade. Trump is lashing out at all and sundry in frustration at the lack of any good options now facing him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hardliners in Tehran sense his encroaching weakness and are now so cocky they\u2019ve rebuffed a secret US attempt to get the peace process back on track this week, forcing the White House to impotently dial up the rhetoric.<\/p>\n

Trump is said to be in \u201crevenge mode\u201d according to aides. And the President sounds ever more bellicose, saying on Thursday that he was close to deciding on a \u2018massive attack\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven senior aides in the White House don\u2019t know what this would mean,\u201d said Neil \u201cThe number of influential voices in Washington who think even ramped-up airstrikes \u2013 as I write, we\u2019ve just had the 14th consecutive night of renewed US attacks on Iran \u2013 will cow Iran into submission are now passing few. In truth, nobody around Trump really knows what to do next \u2013 or what he will do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 I listened to several influential figures close to Trump mull over the options. The assumption was that some sort of ground incursion was inevitable. That is certainly the new vibe coming out of Washington,\u201d said Neil. \u201cThey talked of seizing Iranian territory on the northern shores of the Gulf to wrest control of the Strait of Hormuz from Tehran. They raised the prospect, again, of invading Kharg Island, from which Iran dispatches most of its oil exports.\u201d<\/p>\n

But there was, much more worryingly, talk of using tactical nuclear weapons to \u2018send a message\u2019 to Tehran and \u2018concentrate its mind\u2019 on peace, warned Neil.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis took me aback. \u2018Do that,\u2019 I snapped \u2018and you destroy America\u2019s reputation and standing for the rest of the century. You\u2019ve also paved the way for President Putin to do the same in Ukraine.\u2019<\/p>\n
