The New York Times reports that President Donald Trump on Friday ordered warning signs and exhibits installed outside the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of American History to alert the public that the museum does not, in his view, accurately reflect American history.<\/p>\n

The executive order is \u201can escalation of the president\u2019s dispute with the Smithsonian and its history museum, which was the subject of a recent 162-page report,\u201d said the Times. \u201cThe report accused the museum\u2019s director, Anthea M. Hartig, of \u2018radical activist ideology\u2019 and the museum of undermining \u2018faith in American institutions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s EO directed the signage to \u201cnotify visitors that the museum exhibits should be renovated \u2026 and direct visitors to locations and resources for accurate information regarding America\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause the museum has failed to appropriately honor the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence during this 250th anniversary year of the founding of our country,\u201d the order continues, government agencies \u201cshall install temporary exhibits or signage on N.P.S.-maintained sidewalks, walkways, and land used by the public that corrects inaccurate information presented in the museum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics immediately hounded Trump for his hard feelings on social media, claiming the president is still stinging from his earlier failed attempts to whitewash U.S. history by removing records of its uglier moments \u2014 primarily those instigated by white people upon others.<\/p>\n

\u201cSnowflake behavior,\u201d spat one commenter on X. <\/p>\n

\u201cTrump just ordered warning signs and exhibits to be installed outside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to alert the public that the museum does not, in his view, accurately reflect American history. Other hecklers noted Trump\u2019s darker ultimate goal.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore you can rewrite history, you have to destroy it,\u201d warned one critic on X.<\/p>\n

While others were quick to point out the MAGA hypocrisy of demanding historic figures be portrayed by white actors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe people demanding a historically accurate Greek myth are perfectly fine with Trump doing this,\u201d said another X user.<\/p>\n

Director Hartig recently defended the museum saying the museum was simply representing complex history, and the Times notes historians criticized Trump\u2019s attempts to overhaul the Smithsonian as ideologically motivated.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot recall a single instance where exhibits have been directly wrestled with by the upper echelons of the federal government,\u201d University of Massachusetts Amherst history professor Samuel J. Redman told the Times.<\/p>\n
