Hours after Sen. Lindsey Graham unexpectedly died on Saturday, many of his Democratic colleagues in the US Senate posted statements on their social media pages paying tribute to the South Carolina Republican.<\/p>\n

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) said that he would most remember Graham (R-SC) for his \u201chis sense of humor and how he deployed it to move his policy positions forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThough we did not often agree,\u201d Schiff added, \u201cSenator Graham was never disagreeable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) similarly said of Graham that \u201ceven though we disagreed on much, he was always willing to negotiate, with humor and wit,\u201d adding \u201cmy heart goes out to his loved ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) said he was \u201csaddened\u201d to hear of news of Graham\u2019s death, which he said came \u201cas a real shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful I had the chance to work with Lindsey,\u201d said Kim, \u201cincluding several international trips working on foreign policy.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, many critics argued that these tributes to Graham overlooked his destructive legacy in public office, including his decades of war mongering and his slavish devotion to the authoritarian President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t give a f that Graham used to be friends with Democratic senators,\u201d wrote Thomas Lecaque, associate professor of history at Grand View University. \u201cHe was a bloodthirsty b—— who cheered the killing of Muslims and sold his soul to the fascists to be able to push it more effectively. I don\u2019t care about any other part of him: his choices caused mass death. That\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Princeton historian Kevin Kruse, responding directly to Schiff\u2019s post, reminded him of Graham\u2019s behavior during the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation hearings when he \u201cthrew an angry tantrum in defense of a SCOTUS nominee credibly accused of rape.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid you all have a good collegial chuckle over that?\u201d Kruse asked.<\/p>\n

Brandon Friedman, co-founder of the Rakkasan Tea Company and a veteran of the Iraq War, also responded directly to Schiff.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I\u2019ll remember most about Senator Graham,\u201d Friedman wrote, \u201cis how he sent my friends to die in an unnecessary war in Iraq.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jen Rubin, editor-in-chief of The Contrarian and former columnist for The Washington Post, described the Democrats\u2019 tributes to Graham as \u201cnauseating\u201d and \u201ceverything that is wrong\u201d with the US Senate.<\/p>\n

Nicholas Grossman, professor of international relations at the University of Illinois, said the Democrats\u2019 statements were just one more signal of weakness from the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Democratic Party\u2019s approval rating is in the toilet,\u201d Grossman wrote, \u201cand the main reason is voters see Dem leaders and prominent members acting like things are basically okay instead of fighting like there\u2019s an emergency. Slot \u2018my friend Lindsey Graham, so funny, how great to work with him\u2019 comments into that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cartoonish Eli Valley was apoplectic about Democrats\u2019 fawning hagiography of their late Republican colleague.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat Democrats see mass-murdering fascists dismantling the country as nothing more than \u2018colleagues they dislike\u2019 is why we\u2019ve been in a non-stop plummet,\u201d Valley wrote. \u201cIncredible this is still debatable, by people who ostensibly oppose fascism, ten years into this?!?\u201d<\/p>\n

Political consultant Jamison Foser wrote a parody of the Democrats\u2019 statements that imagined them paying tribute to none other than Satan.<\/p>\n

\u201cDeeply saddened to learn of the loss of my dear friend Satan, the Prince of Lies,\u201d wrote Foser. \u201cThough we often disagreed about matters such as the appropriate role of torture in the afterlife, I will most remember how his quick wit and affable nature made our weekly golf outings a ritual. He will be missed.\u201d<\/p>\n
