Over the course of his second term, President Donald Trump has had few friends among world leaders, but he and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni<\/u> backed one another largely due to their shared far-right positions. Now, after that relationship was badly strained by a claim he made about Meloni at the recent G7 summit that she says was a lie, he appears to have burned that bridge once and for all with his latest \u201csexist insult,\u201d leaving him more isolated on the world stage than ever. <\/p>\n

This is according to the iPaper\u2019s<\/u> latest report on the just-ended NATO summit in Turkey, the build-up to which \u201cwas dominated by Trump\u2019s latest clash\u201d with Meloni “after he shared an edited social media post with a photo of her appearing to look at him with adoration and the message \u2018restraining order needed.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

This was the \u201clast straw\u201d for Meloni, who has barely had time to react to Trump\u2019s previous offense. As the iPaper explains, \u201cLast month, she responded to Trump\u2019s claim that she \u2018begged\u2019 him for a photo to improve her political standing by calling it \u2018completely made up\u2019 and adding: \u2018I am stunned that he behaves this way towards allies.\u2019\u201d \u201cNeither I nor Italy ever beg,\u201d she posted<\/u> to Instagram, adding, \u201cMy popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours.\u201d <\/p>\n

At the time, a number of world leaders and figures blasted Trump\u2019s insult. Belgium\u2019s defence minister, Theo Francken, said, \u201cOf course we need [Trump] as an ally, but don\u2019t touch Meloni. She\u2019s the queen of the centre-right in Europe. She\u2019s the alpha. Leave her alone.\u201d And veteran U.S. diplomat and ambassador, Daniel Fried, said that Trump\u2019s post was a \u201cgratuitous insult\u2026 that is going to p\u2014\u2014 off a lot of other Europeans who are going to find their dim views of Trump confirmed. It does damage for no discernible good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s attack may actually benefit Meloni, \u201cwho lost a referendum on constitutional reform in March partly because \u2018she was seen as too Trump-friendly in a country where Italians hate Trump,\u2019 said S\u00e9bastien Maillard of the Europe Programme at Chatham House. \u2018She will be facing elections next year and Trump distancing from her is politically not so bad for her.\u2019\u201d Maillard explained that \u201cleaders are learning that standing up to Trump is popular with their publics \u2014 polls show he is disliked and distrusted across the continent<\/u> \u2014 and they are increasingly willing to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n

This incident reflects a wider trend of Trump\u2019s willingness to insult his fellow right-wing ideological allies<\/u>. According to the iPaper, \u201cJordan Bardella, president of the far-right National Rally (RN) party in France, recently described Trump as \u2018erratic\u2019 and \u2018unsteady,\u2019 while the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) criticized the attack on Iran. Both were previously staunch supporters.\u201d As Maillard explained, \u201cThere\u2019s an inherent contradiction in being a MAGA supporter and a nationalist in Europe, because then you side with someone who is always bullying your nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Georgios Samaras, professor of public policy and specialist on US politics at King\u2019s College London, Trump has been \u201closing influence\u201d over allies who are increasingly willing to defy him. \u201cWe\u2019re dealing with a bully, and you cannot deal with bullies by staying neutral,\u201d he said. \u201cMeloni is showing the way, and that is an interesting development.\u201d <\/p>\n

For her part, at the NATO conference \u2014 the first time she\u2019s met with Trump since his G7 insult \u2014 Meloni said simply that she maintains \u2018cordial relations\u2019 with the American president. But according to analysts, as Trump\u2019s allies have dwindled, Europeans have begun to consider \u201cwhat happens after Trump.\u201d As Astrid Brod\u00e9nof the Swedish Institute of International Affairs noted, U.S. allies sense \u201cblood in the water, and a post-Trump future on the horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n
