President Donald Trump\u2019s 11th-hour endorsement in the Texas GOP primary went to far-right Attorney General Ken Paxton over establishment Republican U.S. Senator John Cornyn, dealing an severe blow to the lawmaker\u2019s chances, angering some prominent GOP lawmakers, and likely boosting the chances of underdog Democrat James Talarico winning the seat in the red Lone Star State.<\/p>\n

\u201cTon of concern among GOP [senators] about Trump\u2019s endorsement of Paxton,\u201d CNN\u2019s Manu Raju reported. \u201cFear it will cost them a lot more money to save a seat in a red state.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) said that Trump\u2019s Paxton endorsement \u201cputs that seat in jeopardy\u201d and asked, \u201chow does that help strengthen the president\u2019s hand when we lose a state like Texas?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSupremely disappointed,\u201d is how she characterized her reaction.<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) declared Paxton is \u201can ethically challenged individual,\u201d reports Semafor congressional bureau chief Burgess Everett.<\/p>\n

\u201cJohn Cornyn is an outstanding senator and deserved, in my judgment, the president\u2019s support,\u201d she said. \u201cObviously, it\u2019s the president\u2019s call, but I\u2019m disappointed that he did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), a top Trump ally, said, \u201cI think Paxton can win. I think it\u2019d be three times more expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson said he was \u201cspeechless\u201d and added, \u201creally have no comment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Described as \u201cnot happy looking,\u201d Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who has supported Senator Cornyn, acknowledged it was President Trump\u2019s decision to make.<\/p>\n

Punchbowl News\u2019 Andrew Desiderio reported that Thune was \u201cstone-faced\u201d after the endorsement, and appeared \u201cpretty deep\u201d in anger.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost GOP senators really want him to endorse Cornyn,\u201d Everett had reported about 90 minutes before the Trump-Paxton endorsement dropped.<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-MT) had said, \u201cI would like to see him support John Cornyn in Texas. I\u2019ve made that clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) had said, \u201cI am hopeful that he backs Sen. Cornyn. John has been a steadfast ally of the president and I hope the president sees that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congressional reporter Jamie Dupree described U.S. Senator Roger Wicker\u2019s (R-MS) response as \u201cstone cold silent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Professor Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia\u2019s Center for Politics, called Trump\u2019s endorsement of Paxton \u201cGreat News for Talarico,\u201d \u201cBad News for GOP money reserves,\u201d and declared, \u201cIf ever there\u2019s a year when a D can win statewide in TX, it\u2019s 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talarico responded to the Trump endorsement: \u201cAs I said on primary night, it doesn\u2019t matter who wins this runoff. We already know who we\u2019re running against: the billionaire mega-donors and their corrupt political system.\u201d<\/p>\n
