After the U.S. bombed Venezuela in the middle of the night and abducted President Nicolas Maduro, President Donald Trump was quick to threaten legitimately-elected governments in the region. In particular, Trump implied a hazy future conflict with Mexico in an interview with Fox News Saturday morning. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, was this operation a message that you\u2019re sending to Mexico, to Claudia Sheinbaum, the president there?\u201d Fox\u2019s Griff Jenkins asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, it wasn\u2019t meant to be, we\u2019re very friendly with her, she\u2019s a good woman,\u201d Trump said, \u201cbut the cartels are running Mexico. She\u2019s not running Mexico. We could be politically correct and be nice and say, \u2018Oh, yes, she is.\u2019 No, no. She\u2019s very, you know, she\u2019s very frightened of the cartels. They\u2019re running Mexico. And I\u2019ve asked her numerous times, \u2018Would you like us to take out the cartels?\u2019 … Something is gonna have to be done with Mexico.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social media wasted no time reacting to Trump\u2019s proposition of interfering with the government of a U.S. ally.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe atmosphere in which The World Cup will be held in less than 6 months’ time in Mexico, USA & Canada. Is he going to ‘capture’ her too??!\u201d said BAFTA-winning filmmaker Sara Afshar on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolls showed Americans were already quite uncertain about invading Venezuela,\u201d said CNN reporter Aaron Blake on X. \u201cJust hours later, Trump is talking about strikes in Mexico, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic candidate Fred Wellman slammed the Republican-dominated Congress for making Trump\u2019s unilateral moves possible in the first place.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is what happens when the Executive is unchecked by Congress,\u201d Wellman said on X. \u201cHe is empowered to do whatever he wants. He knows the Doormat Congress will do whatever he wants so now he is talking about attacking our ally and neighbor because no one will say \u2018no.\u2019”<\/p>\n

New York Health Executive Director Melanie D\u2019Arrigo questioned the president\u2019s motivations, arguing, \u201cif Trump cared about drugs he wouldn\u2019t have pardoned the Silk Road founder whose online platform let drug dealers sell more than $200 million in illegal drugs \u2026 or the former President of Honduras, convicted of conspiring to import over 400 tons of cocaine into the U.S. \u2026 and dozens of other drug traffickers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other critics were more nihilistic, with one posting \u201cMexico is next on the list. They don\u2019t have oil, but they do have avocados.\u201d<\/p>\n
