According to former federal prosecutor Jim Zirin, Americans should be worried about President Donald Trump\u2019s aspirations to follow in the footsteps of the so-called \u201cgreat men\u201d of history. When Trump speaks about the famed leaders he hopes to match or surpass, he doesn\u2019t reference George Washington or Winston Churchill, but some of history\u2019s most \u201cbloodthirsty dictators.\u201d This, according to Zirin, reveals the president\u2019s desire for \u201climitless power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Writing in the Hill<\/u>, Zirin points to the recently released book Regime Change, which offers a behind-the-scenes view of Trump\u2019s chaotic, autocratic White House. When interviewed by the book\u2019s authors, Trump \u201cunveiled a document arguing he is more powerful than mass murderers Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Adolf Hitler.\u201d As Trump read the document, he recited the names of each dictator, and explained how each \u201cfell short of his own power as U.S. president.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIs our president mad?\u201d writes Zirin, saying that \u201cyou may draw your own conclusion,\u201d but noting that when Trump posted the dictator document on Truth Social last week, it didn\u2019t help the case against madness. While Trump asserted it was written by a \u201cpresidential historian,\u201d Regime Change revealed that it was in fact written by his friend\u2019s golf caddy. <\/p>\n

According to Zirin, \u201cHaberman and Swan write that<\/u> the revealing part was \u2018the evident pleasure he took in the company of Mao, Hitler <\/u>and Stalin\u2019 \u2014 and<\/u> \u2018the untroubled ease with which he accepted a place among men who had reshaped the world through conquest and fear.\u2019\u201d Why is the president so eager to be compared to these mass murderers? Zirin suggests it\u2019s because \u201cTrump is through testing the unitary limits of the presidency. He is describing power in world-historical terms \u2014 placing himself in the annals of conquerors, dictators and war criminals who worked nations to their wicked will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor all of Trump\u2019s bombast about limitless power,\u201d writes Zirin, \u201che acknowledged one force still constrains him \u2014 the economy. He argued<\/u> that extending the war to satisfy hawks could have triggered a \u2018worldwide depression.\u2019 He pointed to falling oil prices and a surging stock market as proof he made the right decision to back a deal that could end the Iran war.\u201d This, notes Zirin, has spurred Trump to reveal the historical figure to which he least wants to be compared: \u201cI have one primary wish as president, in terms of people: I never want to be the late, great Herbert Hoover<\/u>,\u201d Trump said<\/u>, referring to the 31st president, whom Zirin says some historians erroneously blame for the Great Depression.<\/p>\n

Instead, Trump is desperate to model himself after the final line in the \u201cGreat Men\u201d document, which asserted that Trump\u2019s willingness to use his power on a global scale \u201cmakes him by far the most powerful person that has EVER walked this planet.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cNot so fast,\u201d writes Zirin, noting that Congress \u2014 including Republicans \u2014 has begun pushing back against his powers, successfully limiting them in many cases. These limits, argues Zirin, will prove essential to the survival of American democracy during the second half of Trump\u2019s term. <\/p>\n

Despite his delusions of grandeur,\u201d concludes Zirin, \u201cTrump is not all-powerful. As King Charles III recently reminded<\/u> Congress, Magna Carta in 1215 gave America the \u2018foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances.\u2019 His words brought lawmakers of both parties to their feet.\u201d<\/p>\n
