DC insiders, including some in the White House, have begun referring to President Donald Trump\u2019s administration as \u201cWeekend at Bernie\u2019s\u201d due to its shambling, farcical nature. What\u2019s more, it\u2019s become clear that \u201cTrump fever is breaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is according to Salon White House correspondent Brian Karem<\/u>, who, based on conversations with wide-ranging figures on Capitol Hill and in the administration, describes a zombie presidency that continues to stagger forward while the chief executive dozes and his aides try to maintain the illusion of normalcy, all while onlookers are aware of the facade.<\/p>\n

As Karem explains, Trump\u2019s recent actions have torpedoed the Republican agenda, prompting members of his own congressional caucus to openly view him with \u201canger and derision.\u201d In the words of one Republican representative, \u201cIt\u2019s a f\u2014\u2014 s\u2013\u2014 show, isn\u2019t it? It\u2019s always about him. That\u2019s his only idea. He\u2019s nuts.\u201d <\/p>\n

This, says Karem, is the sign that \u201cTrump fever is breaking.\u201d Not only are top voices in the GOP pushing back against him, but they\u2019re now considering their options for \u201cwhen the day finally comes that the 80-year-old president is no longer around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of us are wondering if it will be sooner than later,\u201d a junior member of Congress said, noting that some \u201chave started to refer to the whole enterprise as \u2018Weekend at Bernie\u2019s\u2019 \u2014 referring to the legendary 1989 comedy in which two aides try to pass off their dead boss as alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

While some of the president\u2019s opponents like to raise the specter of impeachment, few in DC think this is likely \u2014 at least until after the midterms, depending on how they turn out. Instead, says Karem, \u201cmembers on both sides of the aisle, and even members of Trump\u2019s staff, are more concerned that the president will roll over like a cockroach and start spouting gibberish (if he hasn\u2019t done that already) or that he simply won\u2019t survive his full term, which still has 940 days to go. In both cases, \u2018Weekend at Bernie\u2019s\u2019 is the proper analogy. \u2018This administration is dead in the water,\u2019 another Republican congressman told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

As a result, writes Karem, \u201cBehind the scenes, there\u2019s a lot of scrambling among Republicans that\u2019s starting to look more like panic than strategy.\u201d They\u2019re infighting over who will be Trump\u2019s heir, and frantically attempting to paint Democrats as \u201ccommunists\u201d following a handful of far-left electoral wins in New York City, \u201ceven as they try to keep the \u2018Weekend at Bernie\u2019s\u2019 routine going.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, asserts Karem, \u201cthe palace is on fire and the king is asleep \u2014 literally. Photos of Trump asleep in public are everywhere and drive home the agonizing \u2018Bernie\u2019s\u2019-themed memes being shared among GOP staffers\u2026Trump is increasingly lethargic, unintelligible and addicted to cosplaying commander-in-chief for the cameras. White House reporters, meanwhile, are preparing for the day \u2014 perhaps a day when they serve as pool reporter \u2014 when they get the call about a calamity befalling the president. That might happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

With all this in mind, Karem forecasts, \u201cthe \u2018Weekend at Bernie\u2019s\u2019 regime can\u2019t possibly last much longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
