On Thursday, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche met with congressional Republicans in an attempt to woo their support for President Donald Trump\u2019s much-criticized $1.8 billion \u201cslush fund.\u201d According to the latest reports, he failed, and now Republicans are heading home for the Memorial Day recess with no agreement. <\/p>\n

Per Punchbowl News senior congressional reporter Andrew Desiderio, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) \u201ctold Senate Republicans at lunch that they\u2019ll be sent home amid impasse over how to restrict \u2018weaponization\u2019 fund in reconciliation bill.\u201d As Desiderio noted, this is \u201cjust a complete disaster for Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s referring to a proposal that cash for the fund could be worked into a budget reconciliation bill Republicans hoped to have on Trump\u2019s desk by Friday. While the budget is primarily for immigration and border enforcement, it does include $1.457 billion for the Department of Justice \u2014 the agency that would be responsible for disbursing the controversial fund \u2014 so the addition of the fund would more than double the amount allocated to the DOJ. But that isn\u2019t going to happen, at least not before Congress breaks until June 1. <\/p>\n

None of this bodes well for Republicans, who have erupted with infighting over several of Trump\u2019s latest actions while facing major headwinds going into the November midterms.<\/p>\n

According to a text message sent to Desiderio by a Republican Senator moments after the Blanche meeting broke, \u201cOur majority is melting down before our eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMany [Republicans] believe Trump has brought this upon himself,\u201d noted Desiderio. \u201cCreating more \u2018free agents\u2019 out of a selfish desire to purge [Republicans] not seen as loyal enough.\u201d Shortly after that, a senior Senate Republican aide told him, \u201cThe problem that led to today\u2019s breakdown is one of the administration\u2019s own making, and it\u2019s one they need to fix. Until then, there simply aren\u2019t the votes to proceed.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Desiderio explained, \u201cThis was a reconciliation bill on a subject that unites Republicans \u2014 ICE and Border Patrol funding.\u201d But Trump has shaken that unity. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of frustration among Senate [Republicans] with [the administration] over the fund \u2014 and the decision to settle [and] announce this week right in the middle of the reconciliation push,\u201d posted congressional reporter Laura Wiess shortly after talks broke down. \u201c[Republicans] still need a lot of questions answered from DOJ, per a Senate GOP aide.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Wiess, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) complained, \u201cThe White House dropped a bomb in the middle of a pretty well planned out reconciliation to deliver on President Trump\u2019s priorities.\u201d <\/p>\n

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) seconded this assessment, saying that the administration had \u201cput itself in this spot.\u201d Reportedly, he told his fellow Republicans, \u201cI\u2019m not sure the fund should exist.\u201d<\/p>\n
