{"id":221,"date":"2026-05-22T06:36:43","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T06:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nextaddressamerica.com\/?p=221"},"modified":"2026-05-22T06:36:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T06:36:43","slug":"go-home-usa-greenlanders-protest-new-american-consulate-as-pm-snubs-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nextaddressamerica.com\/?p=221","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Go home USA&#8217;: Greenlanders protest new American consulate as PM snubs opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s opening of a new U.S. consulate in <strong>Greenland<\/strong>\u2018s capital city of Nuuk did not go well for the Americans, as protesters swamped the street, according to video posted by Orla Joelsen, a native Greenlander and prison official in Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextaddressamerica.com\/?p=219\">\u2018What the president said\u2019: Republican caught off guard after CNN host quotes Trump to her<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo home USA!\u201d participants could be heard chanting.<\/p>\n<p>At least one protester held up a sign that read, \u201cGreenland is not for sale!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been a difficult week for Americans in Nuuk.<\/p>\n<p>The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said he would not attend Thursday\u2019s opening of the new consulate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t made a decision in principle, but I won\u2019t participate,\u201d the prime minister told the Greenlandic news outlet Sermitsiaq, according to a Google translation.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump\u2019s Special Envoy to Greenland, Louisiana Republican Governor Jeff Landry, touched down in Nuuk on Sunday, saying he arrived \u201csimply to build relationships,\u201d and to \u201csee if there are opportunities\u201d to expand them.<\/p>\n<p>His appeal to several young Greenlanders, free chocolate chip cookies if they traveled to visit him, was met with a poor response.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nextaddressamerica.com\/?p=217\">Ex-Trumper: His supporters are loyal to him like trained dogs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you come to Louisiana,\u201d Governor Landry said, \u201cand you come to the governor\u2019s mansion \u2014 all the chocolate chip cookies you can eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Prime Minister Nielsen on Monday said Greenland would not become part of the U.S., \u201cno matter how many \u2018chocolate cookies\u2019 we get,\u201d according to the Times-Picayune.<\/p>\n<p>The relationship between Greenland and the United States has been tense since President Donald Trump began his campaign to have the U.S. take over the autonomous territory that is part of Denmark.
