President Donald Trump\u2019s former national security adviser is in charge of a MAGA non-profit staffed with Trump loyalists \u2014 but apparently they are secretly at each other\u2019s throats.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince taking over the storied conservative group America\u2019s Future in 2021, retired general Michael Flynn has turned it into a real rogue\u2019s gallery,\u201d The Bulwark\u2019s Will Sommer wrote on Monday. \u201cFor one, Flynn, who briefly served as Donald Trump\u2019s national security adviser in the first administration, put Lara Logan\u2014the former CBS News reporter turned conspiracy theorist\u2014on the nonprofit\u2019s board. Flynn also launched an anti-child trafficking initiative within America\u2019s Future called \u2018Project Defend & Protect Our Children,\u2019 which he stocked with fringe activists, including Pizzagate true believer Liz Crokin, who now serves as a Project board member.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet this \u201ckook heaven\u201d proved to be \u201chardly paradise,\u201d Sommer observed, as a rash of unexplained resignations began depleting the organization\u2019s staff.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cause of these resignations remains unclear,\u201d Sommer said. \u201cBut, as a whole, they strongly suggest that Flynn\u2019s organization, a pillar of the conspiratorial right, may be in serious trouble. America\u2019s Future didn\u2019t respond to requests for comment. Neither did anyone who resigned.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cRest assured, I\u2019m working to get to the bottom of all this. Unfortunately, my skeptical approach to QAnon and other conspiracy theories appears to have alienated some of the key people involved in this story. When I asked Moore, who was tweeting over the weekend about how Barack Obama would soon be arrested for treason, why he had resigned, he declined to tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sommer then quoted a statement by Ben Moore, \u201ca lawyer on the \u201cProject Defend\u201d advisory board\u201d who when resigning earlier this month resigned used \u201cQAnon-style language as a \u2018digital soldier.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWill, you shit on so many of us for so long,\u201d Moore said in his statement. \u201cYou want a story to try to destroy General Flynn.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another QAnon booster who is sticking by Flynn, Sommer pointed out, has tried to downplay the resignations, but has used language which raises more questions. Sommer described it as \u201cdrunk night between grown adults,\u201d adding that \u201cthere\u2019s no side. People are upset over personal shit. Drunk night between grown adults. This s\u2014\u2014\u2014 has NOTHING to do with General Flynn or his organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The details have been left \u201cblank,\u201d Sommer concluded.<\/p>\n

Flynn has been criticized before for his cozyness with Trump, which has also seemed to personally benefit him financially. In March a former Justice Department prosecutor accused Flynn of committing theft by accepting a $1.25 million settlement after pleading guilty under oath to intentionally making false statements to the FBI in 2017.<\/p>\n

“I really do not understand how you justify this as anything but theft,” Andrew Weissmann told “The Illegal News” at the time. “To make this a legitimate settlement, there would have to be a good faith belief that he has a meritorious argument and that there might be some downside in litigating this.”<\/p>\n
