Senate Republicans had already grown vocal in their opposition to President Donald Trump\u2019s unprecedented $1.8 billion fund to compensate alleged victims of Justice Department \u201cweaponization\u201d during the Biden years. After a nearly two-hour meeting Thursday with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche that participants described as \u201cincredibly hostile,\u201d their opposition hardened \u2014 and the reasons why became clearer.<\/p>\n

U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) spoke with CNN\u2019s Manu Raju on Thursday, and denounced the legislative strategy behind the $1.8 billion fund \u2014 but not the fund itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cRon Johnson told me the Trump administration should have focused on getting ICE\/CBP bill passed and the decision to unveil $1.8B fund now (when they\u2019re trying to pass the bill) was a giant mistake,\u201d Raju reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody described it as a galactic blunder, and I think that\u2019s probably true,\u201d Johnson told the CNN anchor.<\/p>\n

\u201cSimilar sentiment among GOP leadership,\u201d the Washington Examiner\u2019s Ramsey Touchberry added, \u201cwho feel [the] situation is a mess of the admin\u2019s own making and Blanche meeting\/WH guidance on anti-weaponization fund made it worse, per source.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of frustration among Senate Republicans over the timing of the anti-weaponization fund \u2014 and the fund itself,\u201d the Washington Post\u2019s Riley Beggin noted. \u201cOne GOP aide told me about half of Senate Rs don\u2019t like it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mediaite notes that \u201cNOTUS\u2019s Reese Gorman reported on the Republicans not being \u2018happy\u2019 with the Trump administration over the fund, which critics are slamming as a massive \u2018slush fund\u2019 to pay Trump allies and donors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have f\u2014\u2014 this up on too many levels to count,\u201d a senior GOP Senate aide told Gorman, Mediaite reports. \u201cThe only thing more toxic than demanding taxpayers foot the bill for a billion-dollar ballroom is demanding taxpayers give billions of dollars to J6 rioters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Axios adds that U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) told reporters that the $1.8 billion fund was dropped like \u201ca bomb in the middle of a pretty well planned out reconciliation bill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Politico reported Thursday that Blanche had struggled \u201cto quash GOP concerns\u201d surrounding the fund. \u201cBlanche met privately with Senate Republicans as the administration and GOP leaders tried to defuse the controversy over the fund.\u201d<\/p>\n
