According to new reporting from NOTUS<\/u>, frustrations are growing between the White House and Senate Republicans, who accuse President Donald Trump of blowing up their agenda with his relentless policy \u201clandmines.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump has torpedoed what appeared to be nearly done deals, including most recently yanking his director of national intelligence nominee Jay Clayton from a fast-tracked confirmation hearing and hobbling an extension of a foreign intelligence gathering tool,\u201d explains NOTUS. \u201cAnd the president has primaried sitting senators he viewed as disloyal.\u201d Because of all this, Senate Majority Leader John Thune is becoming frantic to secure some semblance of a policy win as experts warn that the Republican majority is imperiled in the upcoming midterms, now only a few months away. As one insider told NOTUS, \u201cWe take two steps forward, but then keep having to check to see if there are any landmines around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThune has about 50 things he wants to get done right now,\u201d explained one Senate Republican. \u201cI think his frustration is when we get stuck in a week and we\u2019re not productive and we\u2019re not able to actually move one of the many things that have got to move.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to NOTUS, \u201cThune\u2019s frustration stems largely from the consistent derailing of the chamber\u2019s agenda and the high-wire act of keeping an increasingly fractured conference united. Prime examples: The president\u2019s \u2018anti-weaponization\u2019 fund that almost tanked the second single-party measure that green-lighted border funds and the latest DNI and FISA rug-pullings.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, based on conversations with GOP lawmakers, Senate aides, current and former administration officials, and people close to the president, not only has the relationship between Trump and Republican senators become \u201ccontentious,\u201d says NOTUS, but there appears to be no way to fix it. <\/p>\n

\u201cThune tells him what he needs to hear, and Johnson tells him what he wants to hear,\u201d one source explained. \u201cRight now, [Trump\u2019s] in a \u2018want to hear\u2019 space.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThune just happens to be the majority leader,\u201d a senior White House official told NOTUS. \u201cThis is what happens when you\u2019re in the big boy chair.\u201d <\/p>\n

For his part, Trump is frustrated by Republicans\u2019 refusal to nuke the filibuster or fire the parliamentarian, the lack of progress on his demand for a voter ID bill, and a law that allows home-state senators to block judicial nominees. Or as one Senate Republican explained, it comes down to the fact that Trump has guardrails at all. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a CEO of companies. When you\u2019re CEO of companies, you just say \u2018this is what we\u2019re going to do\u2019 and the company does it,\u201d said the Senator. \u201cHe gets frustrated with the judges because you can\u2019t tell the judges what to do. He gets frustrated with the legislative branch. Same thing \u2014 you can\u2019t compel it. You\u2019ve got to be able to work with people and figure it out.\u201d <\/p>\n

According to sources, rank-and-file Republican Senators feel disrespected by a White House that \u201cdoesn\u2019t care\u201d about the approaching midterms. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere hasn\u2019t been enough of a heads-up when they\u2019re going to do something, particularly the president, but I don\u2019t really know if the president\u2019s staff really knows that he\u2019s going to be doing stuff,\u201d said another Senate Republican. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at these electoral numbers, and we all have to get on the same page here \u2014 quickly.\u201d <\/p>\n
