Longtime Republican political consultant Karl Rove is warning that President Donald Trump\u2019s own actions could be \u201chelping Democrats\u201d take back the House, writing in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the GOP\u2019s midterm chances are at risk, as Mediaite reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cGerrymandering helped Republicans. But the president\u2019s actions are helping Democrats. That could give Democrats the House,\u201d Rove wrote.<\/p>\n

He noted that \u201cDemocrats lead on the generic congressional ballot by 6.6 points in Nate Silver\u2019s Silver Bulletin average of recent polls and by 11 in the latest New York Times\/Siena survey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rove suggested President Trump \u2014 and his approval numbers \u2014 are to blame for the \u201cwidening gap,\u201d Mediaite notes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe GOP\u2019s chances will get worse if President Trump\u2019s approval numbers keep declining. They\u2019re already dangerously low. Wednesday, his approval hit 39.8% in the RealClearPolitics average, the lowest of his second term so far,\u201d Rove wrote.<\/p>\n

The GOP \u201cneeds better White House message discipline on the Iran war,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking things worse are Mr. Trump\u2019s erratic late-night missives. The president comes across more as a heckler at a UFC match than as a reassuring wartime commander in chief,\u201d Rove charged.<\/p>\n

Trump is also \u201cmucking up his domestic messaging.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rove praised Trump for announcing Monday he is reducing healthcare costs via TrumpRX.com.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut long after the memory of that announcement fades, voters will recall Tuesday\u2019s news conference at the White House ballroom construction site,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The president spoke at length about very specific details of the ballroom and the military complex, including a hospital, that he wants to build underneath it.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s $1 billion request for security enhancements \u201cwon\u2019t convert voters.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNor will bragging that \u2018there will never be another building like this,\u2019 especially with Americans upset about $5-a-gallon gasoline, which Mr. Trump dismissed as \u2018peanuts.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Rove suggests Trump stay off the road and not campaign during the midterms, and let Republicans distance themselves if they like.<\/p>\n

\u201cBetter that he\u2019s chief executive right now than campaigner-in-chief,\u201d Rove suggested.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more undisciplined the White House messages on war and the economy, the more at risk GOP candidates will be,\u201d Rove wrote. \u201cThe more Mr. Trump thrusts himself into the campaign, the more damage he\u2019ll do to Republicans and his own cause.\u201d<\/p>\n
