President Donald Trump claimed that the US and Iran are on track to sign a diplomatic agreement this weekend, but added that \u201cwe have the ultimate alternative\u201d if the process doesn\u2019t \u201cwork out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018ultimate alternative\u2019 sounds a lot like a nuclear threat,\u201d Sina Toossi, a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, wrote in response to the president\u2019s Truth Social post. \u201cNot the first time Trump has hinted at it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The agreement Trump referenced is believed to be \u201cmemorandum of understanding\u201d that\u2019s expected be fleshed out in \u201ctechnical talks\u201d that could begin next week, according to Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is mediating the negotiations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are closer to a peace deal than ever before,\u201d Sharif wrote on social media, echoing Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who said on Friday that \u201cthe Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPending its finalization, the media should refrain from entering speculation about its content,\u201d Araghchi added. \u201cIn line with our responsible and transparent approach, all details will be shared with the public in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Saturday, a spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry cast doubt on the timeline put forth by Trump and Sharif.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will have to wait and see about the exact date of the signing of the memorandum of understanding, although it will not be tomorrow,\u201d said Esmaeil Baqaei, as reported by Iranian state media. \u201cThe possibility of this happening in the coming days cannot be ruled out. However, due to the hesitation of the other side, we must be cautious in making any comments about this process.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump declared that the Strait of Hormuz will be \u201cOPEN TO ALL\u201d immediately after the deal is signed\u2014a condition that Iran has not confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to working with Iran, and the entire Middle East, long into the future,\u201d Trump added. \u201cHopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn\u2019t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly issued genocidal threats against Iran since launching the illegal war in late February, openly declaring his intention to target Iran\u2019s civilian infrastructure and wipe out its \u201cwhole civilization.\u201d Experts say such threats, even if they aren\u2019t acted on, constitute war crimes under international law.<\/p>\n
