Politico reports disgruntled Republicans facing voters\u2019 fury in November are setting Labor Day as a hard deadline on ending the unpopular war in Iran, according to interviews with more than a dozen people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s different this time, they say: September is the unofficial kickoff of general election season, when more voters tune in and the stakes get higher,\u201d reports Politico. \u201cAmid rising U.S. casualties, gas prices and fertilizer costs, these Republicans indicated the political risk of the ongoing war is heightening as the midterms draw near.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026 [V]oters need some time to see prices coming down before Election Day,\u201d said an anonymous GOP strategist working on battleground House races Nevada. \u201cIf we can get this normalized with some time, we\u2019ll be okay. But if we\u2019re looking at Labor Day coming up on us, and we still have $5 a gallon gas, we\u2019ll be in big trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy the first of September \u2026 it needs to be resolved,\u201d said Dan Naylor, who runs the Lackawanna County GOP in a tough House battleground district in Pennsylvania. \u201cYou get more focused on the election at that point in time, and we need to be able to point to falling prices.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Politico reports that preliminary deals with Iran to end the war have evaporated, one after another, despite Trump\u2019s promises that an agreement was imminent (possibly to briefly jigger U.S. markets), and that \u201clingering skepticism hangs over the negotiations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not the first time an agreement seemed imminent, only for the war to continue,\u201d reports Politico, and \u201cthe cracks within the GOP have started to spill into public view, with some candidates emphasizing the need for the war to wrap up soon, even if they agreed with its initial goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Politico reports Rep. Ashley Hinson, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in Iowa, admitted at a campaign event last month that the war would become a \u201cpolitical liability\u201d if it drags on beyond \u201cthe next couple of weeks.\u201d And Sen. Jon Husted, (R-Ohio) confessed that the war \u201cneeds to,\u201d come to an end. Others, including Sen. Pete Ricketts, who is running for reelection in Nebraska, told local radio that he wants the war ended \u201cas quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Additionally, in May and June, eight Republican lawmakers sided with Democrats to vote against Trump\u2019s war powers, which Politico described as an \u201cextraordinary\u201d break from the president for a party that has proven so beholden to one man.<\/p>\n
