Senate Republican Majority Leader John Thune was noticeably absent from Wednesday\u2019s Oval Office bill signing ceremony \u2014 but top House and Senate leaders \u2014 including Speaker Mike Johnson \u2014 were present, cheering on the president. Thune did take time to talk with reporters, where he tied Wednesday\u2019s surging inflation numbers to Trump\u2019s Iran war.<\/p>\n

The Washington Examiner\u2019s David Sivak asked Thune directly why he wasn\u2019t present at the president\u2019s signing of the $70 billion reconciliation bill to fund ICE and the Border Patrol, or to talk about FISA legislation with Trump.<\/p>\n

Thune noted that Speaker Johnson is \u201cdown there anyway\u201d and that he and Johnson \u201ctalk regularly,\u201d Sivak reported.<\/p>\n

Thune appeared to suggest that there might not have been an invitation, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t know that we got asked, but I\u2019ve got stuff going on here, as you know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thune spelled out the inflation connection to reporters, as Punchbowl News\u2019 Andrew Desiderio reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sooner we get the situation in Iran stabilized, the Strait [of Hormuz] opened up, those [inflation] numbers will trend in a better direction,\u201d he said. \u201cBut obviously right now there are important national security objectives we\u2019re trying to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe American people realize that if we\u2019re heading in the right direction and the trendlines are good and the confidence is good long-term \u2014 which I [think] it will be because of all the other things we\u2019ve done on the economy \u2014 then obviously people will start to see improvement,\u201d he also said. \u201cIt may not happen overnight, but it will. But at least for now, we\u2019ve got to do everything we can to keep the pressure on [in] getting the situation in the Middle East resolved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting the situation in Iran resolved was not how President Trump appeared to approach Iran on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIran\u2019s Military is a complete and total mess,\u201d he wrote on Truth Social. \u201cMuch of it, like their Navy and Air Force, doesn\u2019t even exist anymore \u2013 They have been completely defeated. Iran is all talk and no action. The Bully of the Middle East is dead!!! They\u2019ve taken too long to negotiate a deal that would have been great for them, now they will have to pay the price!!!\u201d<\/p>\n

In that Oval Office meeting, Trump also slammed Iran, saying that the U.S. would hit Iran hard again on Wednesday, and insisted the Iranian government is \u201cplaying us for suckers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thune has distanced himself from the president over time, refusing his repeated demands to pass the controversial SAVE America Act \u2014 legislation some call voter suppression \u2014 to kill the filibuster, and to fire the Senate parliamentarian. He has also opposed Trump\u2019s intelligence nominee. Thune tried to persuade Trump to back Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), but the president endorsed Ken Paxton instead \u2014 and Paxton went on to defeat Cornyn in the May primary runoff.<\/p>\n
