Hard-right groups have expanded their influence inside the Trump administration, a new report on hate and extremism by the Southern Poverty Law Center finds, according to The Guardian. A federal grand jury indicted the SPLC, a civil rights organization, on federal fraud charges earlier this year \u2014 months before the report\u2019s publication.<\/p>\n

\u201c2025 was a turbulent year marked by injustice, social upheaval and stark new threats from a hard-right movement rapidly establishing its power across institutions,\u201d reads the director\u2019s note to the SPLC\u2019s \u201c2025 Year in Hate and Extremism\u201d series. \u201cThe hard right effectively seized the power of government as a messenger for extremist rhetoric and a tool to dictate policies affecting the everyday lives of millions of people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration \u201cradically\u201d shifted policy to favor hard-right and extremists, claims the report titled \u201cEmpowering Extremists,\u201d which was published Tuesday as part of the series.<\/p>\n

The report found that the Trump administration has \u201cshifted the focus of federal law enforcement away from violent crime investigations to sweeping immigration raids through American communities, targeting undocumented people as well as Black and Brown people \u2014 often regardless of immigration status and absent any suspicion of a violent offense.\u201d<\/p>\n

It states that on Sept. 22, 2025, \u201cTrump issued an overly broad, vague executive order designating \u2018antifa\u2019 \u2014 a term often applied to people and community-based organizations opposing white supremacy, racism and the far right more generally \u2014 as a domestic terrorist organization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Guardian noted that the SPLC report \u201cpointed to conservative influencer Andy Ngo, who told Trump during a roundtable in October that \u2018perhaps the state department should designate Antifa \u2026 a foreign terrorist organization.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWould you like to see it done?\u201d Trump replied. \u201cYou think it would help? I\u2019d be glad to do it. I think it\u2019s the kind of thing I\u2019d like to do. Does everybody agree? If you agree, I agree. Let\u2019s get it done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump \u201ckept his promise,\u201d the SPLC noted. \u201cIn November 2025, the State Department named four left-wing militant groups as foreign terrorist organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report stated that the Trump administration\u2019s \u201claw enforcement shifts make Americans less safe,\u201d and its actions increase the \u201cthreat posed by far-right extremism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe administration gutted efforts to tackle hard-right extremism and downplayed \u2014 and even defended \u2014 the threat of right-wing extremist violence,\u201d the report alleges. For example, the DOJ \u201cremoved a June 2024 peer-reviewed study from its website that concluded that far-right attacks continue \u2018to outpace all other types of terrorism and domestic violent extremism.’\u201d<\/p>\n
