Economist and Nobel laureate Paul Krugman has pinpointed a series of events that have led to the rest of the world seeing America as \u201cinessential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just weeks after President Donald Trump was sworn into his second term in office, he held a televised Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during which he and his top administration officials berated the leader fending off Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s illegal war.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have the cards right now,\u201d Trump told Zelenskyy. But according to Krugman, Zelenskyy has \u201cquite a few cards, while Trump has far fewer cards than he imagined.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krugman calls that Oval Office dressing-down \u201ca spectacle that shamed America,\u201d with Trump \u201cengaging in petty bullying of the leader of a nation fighting for its life against tyranny.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oval Office attack was just the start of what would make the world start to rethink its relationship to the U.S.<\/p>\n

Trump then cut off all financial aid to Ukraine and blocked weapons sales to the battered nation \u2014 even when other nations were paying the bill.<\/p>\n

Trump later met with Putin, where, \u201cas the Russians see it, he offered to broker a deal that would give Russia control of a crucial fortress belt on Ukrainian soil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Krugman calls that \u201ca shocking betrayal of a democracy fighting for its freedom \u2014 and, in so doing, fighting for the freedom of Europe as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while 18 GOP senators Thursday voted to restore aid to Ukraine, against the will of their leadership, should that bill come to Trump\u2019s desk, it is doubtful he would sign it.<\/p>\n

Despite Trump\u2019s abandonment of Ukraine, Ukraine turned the war in its favor, and by doing so, taught the world a lesson.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore Trump, we were also a nation almost universally regarded as essential,\u201d writes Krugman. \u201cNations believed that they needed access to U.S. banks to do business, access to U.S. markets to prosper, access to U.S. weapons to defend themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut by breaking decades\u2019 worth of international agreements \u2014 not to mention threatening allies and betraying Ukraine \u2014 Trump quickly forfeited the world\u2019s trust.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump \u201cfailing so spectacularly against Iran, a far weaker military power,\u201d has also \u201cdispelled much of the world\u2019s fear,\u201d Krugman says.<\/p>\n

The world is \u201cmanaging economically\u201d despite Trump\u2019s tariffs and his abandonment of Ukraine \u2014 and Ukraine is \u201csurviving despite Trump\u2019s attempt to cut it off at the knees,\u201d says Krugman, revealing that America is \u201cmuch less essential than everyone assumed.\u201d<\/p>\n
