On Wednesday, MAGA-oriented Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) claimed she was assaulted by the founder of the grassroots women\u2019s peace group CodePink. But according to newly emerged video evidence<\/u>, her allegations appear to be more than a little exaggerated. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe head honcho of CodePink here on Capitol Hill decided to try to harass me as I was leaving my hearing with Rubio and smacked my arm,\u201d Luna posted<\/u> to X. \u201cI have no issues answering questions but the moment you touch me you cross a line.\u201d Later, she claimed again that she was \u201csmacked<\/u>\u201d and that she \u201cwill be filing charges.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uproar flared across social media as a result. <\/p>\n

\u201cViolence has no place in a democracy,\u201d posted El Salvadorian ambassador Milena Mayorga<\/u>, calling the incident \u201cunacceptable and cowardly,\u201d and saying, \u201cDifferences are settled with truth and open debate, not with attacks or intimidation.\u201d <\/p>\n

Another commenter asserted, \u201cThese people are psychos.\u201d<\/p>\n

And many raised the conspiracy theory that CodePink is funded by the communist Chinese government, a claim that Luna has propagated herself. She alleges that the \u201cattack\u201d was part of an attempt to silence her questions about the \u201ccommunist organization.\u201d <\/p>\n

One problem with her allegation of violence, however: a video obtained by TMZ<\/u> shows that the \u201csmack\u201d was in fact a light brush against the arm. As the CodePink founder in question, Medea Benjamin, argued with Luna about her position on the embargo against Cuba, Benjamin brushed against the Congresswoman\u2019s arm, prompting the latter to freak out. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhen was the last time you were in Cuba?\u201d Benjamin asked, brushing Luna\u2019s jacket sleeve. <\/p>\n

\u201cWait, you just touched me,\u201d Luna declared. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Benjamin apologized.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter,\u201d Luna said. \u201cYou just touched me. You\u2019re going to walk away right now or else I\u2019m going to call Capitol Police.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to CodePink, Benjamin was then briefly detained by Capitol Police, but was released when they saw the video. <\/p>\n

Per its mission statement, CodePink is \u201ca women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. wars and militarism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect our tax dollars into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life-affirming programs.\u201d An economist, nutritionist, and lifelong activist, Benjamin co-founded the group in 2002 in an effort to oppose the Iraq War. She has drawn conservative ire for decades due to her opposition to war and dedication to labor rights, corporate responsibility, and Palestinian rights, and has been targeted by MAGA in particular since heckling then-presidential candidate Donald Trump during his 2016 Republican nomination acceptance speech. Two years before that, she received the prestigious Gandhi Peace Award.<\/p>\n

After the incident, Benjamin posted a photo<\/u> of herself with Representative Maria Salazar (R-FL), in which the latter has her hands on either side of the former\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny how @RepLuna called the police to arrest me (they didn\u2019t once they saw the video) because she said I touched her arm,\u201d Benjamin noted. \u201c10 minutes later @RepMariaSalazar grabbed my face. I\u2019m not complaining because she didn\u2019t do it maliciously, I\u2019m just pointing out the lunacy of @RepLuna.\u201d<\/p>\n
